Outside of combat, landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier is just about the most dangerous thing you can do in an airplane. Catching tailhook on arresting gear induces a sudden deceleration that is often referred to as a controlled crash. But sometimes things go terribly wrong. Featured on this DVD are six rare and historic films, totally nearly two hours of material, made by the U.S. Navy to train pilots and deck crews how to avoid disaster in the event of an incident. They include footage of barricade arrestments, under-powered catapult launches necessitating ejections, and an explanation of the causes of the fires that ravaged supercarriers Oriskany, Forrestal and Enterprise. Featured films are from the 1950’s-70’s era and include: The Angled Deck Carrier, Carrier Mishaps, Down to the Wire (a profile of pilots as they attempt their first carrier landings), The Mark 5 Barricade, Disasters Don’t Just Happen and Flight Deck Safety. Also included as a bonus is actual real-time PLAT camera footage of an incident involving an F-8 with stuck landing gear. (Please note: this footage is silent).
