For humans and vampires, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always–always–guard your heart.
The adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, Oraya carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself.
But winning won’t be easy amongst the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival.
Everything about Raihn is dangerous. He is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, an enemy to her father’s crown…and her greatest competition. Yet, what terrifies Oraya most of all is that she finds herself oddly drawn to him.
But there’s no room for compassion in the Kejari. War for the House of Night brews, shattering everything that Oraya thought she knew about her home.
In a kingdom where nothing is more deadly than love, Raihn may understand her more than anyone, but their blossoming attraction could be her downfall.
The Serpent and the Wings of Night is the first book in the Crowns of Nyaxia series, a heart-wrenching romance full of dark magic and bloodthirsty intrigue.

Thrilling, romantic and charged with emotion
I hadnât even heard of this book when I was offered a review copy, but a few glowing reviews caught my attention and I agreed to read it. And Iâm so glad I did! This was a wonderful surprise, a dark, dangerous, vampire tale with intricate world building, great characters and a little bit of spice. Even better, this is the first book in a series, and Iâm so excited to see what comes next. Yes, there are some familiar tropes at work here, but I found the combination of all the different elements to work surprisingly well. If you love The Hunger Games or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I guarantee youâll find a lot to love in The Serpent & the Wings of Night.Oraya was only seven when her village was destroyed and her entire family killed. Plucked out of the wreckage by a vampire king named Vincent, Oraya has been living in the House of Night, one of three vampire factions in the land of Obitraes, for the last sixteen years. Vincent has raised her as his daughter, teaching her how to survive in a land ruled by vampires, and it turns out, preparing her to complete in a once-every-hundred-years competition called the Kejari. The Kejari is made up of five brutal trials, each one winnowing the contestants down until only two remain. Only one victor can be crowned at the end, though, and Oraya is determined to be the last one standing. The reward for victory is sweet: any wish you want, granted by the goddess Nyaxia. Orayaâs wish? To become a vampire herself and fight side by side with her father in the war against the Rishan, a rival vampire clan within the House of Night. But once the trials start, Oraya realizes it’s going to be hard, if not impossible, to win. Luckily, she meets a vampire named Raihn who asks her to ally with him and his friend Mische. Oraya and Raihn work surprisingly well together and they become a formidable team against the other contestants. But, as Oraya must keep reminding herself, only one of them will survive the Kejari, and the more she gets to know Raihn, the less she wants to kill him. This is a lush, complex world, and the author does a very good job of introducing it in this first book, even though Iâm certain sheâs only scratched the surface. At first it was a little hard to keep everything straight. There are three main vampire âhouses,â but within those there are smaller factions. Each house has its own types of power and magic derived from different gods, and the houses donât usually intermingle with each other, although the Kejari is the exception, because vampires from each house are allowed to join the competition. And it isnât just vampires in this world. Humans live among them, although they are mostly treated as servants or even food. Because Oraya is under the protection of a vampire king, sheâs safer than most, but she still has to watch her back at all times. In addition to the competition plot, which is the main focus of the story, thereâs a war brewing in the background that will most likely take on a bigger role in the next book. Thereâs a lot of Shakespearean drama and tragedy going on too. Vampires will kill their parents to take over as leader, and then theyâll kill their children so they canât do the same to them. This isnât a happy world by any means, but luckily there are bright spots in the plot.Which brings me to the characters. The focus of the story is the slow build relationship between Oraya and Raihn, an enemies-to-lovers romance that I thought was very well done. Oraya, who spends her free time stalking vampires and killing them, is horrified to find she’s starting to like and respect one, especially when she discovers heâs one of the Rishan, her fatherâs enemy. Oraya has a prickly personality, which I quite loved, although she eventually starts to warm up to Raihn. But their banter was so much fun, charged with all sorts of emotions, and I loved how the author gave them time and space to get to know each other before (yup) hopping in bed together. There are a lot of great side characters as well. Mische is the sweetest vampire in the story, and her friendship with Raihn was wonderful. I was rooting for the three of them to be OK, but wow, some of the scenes in this book were so stressful! Vincent was an interesting character as well. I didnât really like him in the beginning, but you can tell Oraya loves him, even if heâs the one who took her away from her home. I liked him less and less as the story went on, and by the end of the book I hated him, lol. Still, it was interesting to see Vincent and Oraya interact, even if I didnât always understand her complicated feelings for him.As for the Kejari, it was thrilling and scary, and the trial scenes had me holding my breath, I was so worried about Oraya, Raihn and Mische. I loved that the actual trials felt different from other âfight to the deathâ stories Iâve read, although donât worry, thereâs plenty of bloodshed! As the end of the last trial approached, I started to get very nervous. After all, thereâs only one winner, right? The author managed to completely surprise me with her ending, making me even more excited to read the second book, The Ashes & the Star Cursed-King. And I canât say enough about Carissa Broadbentâs writing. Her prose breathes life into her characters, and her storytelling skills make this a must read for fans of vampire/fantasy romance.

Edge of your seat good
A friend recommended this book to me, and I wasnât sure I would like it. Iâm not usually one for vampire fantasy, and, boy, did I not know what I was in for with this novel. The story development as well as the world building was incredible. I also liked how the author described the different vampire clans to help readers understand their animosity. I didnât feel like she was overly descriptive, which fantasy novel writers tend to be when trying to convey a new world to the audience.I absolutely loved the characters and the banter between the FMC and MMC was unmatched. It reminded me so much of Poppy and Cas. And the way they interacted with one another was fun and sexy. I love their chemistry, and the author did a great job developing their relationship. This book also has a fabulous twist of dash of Hunger Games, which I enjoyed so much. It gave a strong reason for certain plot points and how characters overlapped.I laughed, I got teary, my heart broke, my toes curled, I read sections over and over again because I loved the words and scenes made me feel â canât wait to dive into the second book.Highly recommend if you are looking for another fantasy series to add to your repertoire. You wonât regret it!

I NEED ALL THE NEXT 5 BOOKS NOW!
This is one of my favorite books of this year. I loved it. It’s full of action, danger, plot twists, magic, and weapons. If you’re a fan of Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer L. Armentrout, this book is for you, and if this is the first book you read from Charissa, she will immediately become one of your favorite writers. I loved how she wrote this book and I can’t wait for book2. What am I saying?! I NEED ALL THE NEXT 5 BOOKS!â Age: 16/17+Be worn âï¸âï¸ a lot of blood, a lot of death, sexual abuse, torture, and descriptive wounds/cuts/deaths âï¸âï¸â Plot twistsâ Full of actionâ Extraordinary written charactersâ Magicâ Vampires and Godsâ Tournament to the death => doomed romance and tough decisionsâ Sexual tensionâ Smutâ Magnificent endingEvery page of this book is filled with action. You won’t get bored, you won’t get tired of it. THESE VAMPIRES HAVE WINGS! The night is a dangerous place, but also one of the most magical places in the course of 24h. I loved Raihn from the start, from his first appearance when his name wasn’t even mentioned. I loved him. I love how his relationship with Oraya starts and how it evolves. The writing is magnificent and it’s very natural. Nothing is forced upon the reader and you discover everything with the characters. You, sometimes, have your doubts and intuitions, and it helps you question some decisions of the characters, but also understand their motives. I even liked Vincent, and at some point, I wanted to see him dead. Well… Yep…I hope we’ll see more of Mische in the next book because I loved her and I think she will be the one who will temper the tension between Oraya and Raihn. I have no doubt, that there will be a lot of tension and uncertainty. The Kejari… well this tournament is a bloody and deadly one. I liked how the trails were written because you can also learn the history AND the story of the main GODDESS. And I think those trials were not just trials for the ultimate goal, for winning a tournament, but also trials for the souls, especially for Raihn and Oraya: trials of trust, creating a strong bond, and life. You can see the similarities between Nyaxia’s history and the present events of Raihn and Oraya.I loved every single page. Charissa has created a magnificent and complex world and mythology. I can’t wait to read more about all three houses and see their stories, and also, to learn more about their past because I think a lot of things will blow in our faces in book 2 of House of Night! Besides, at the end of this one, I came to the conclusion that nothing is what it seems in the case of these Houses, and I’m really intrigued to learn about all of them.Thank you Charissa for this wonderful world you’ve created. I have a feeling this is only the beginning and everything will escalate and blow our minds.

4.5âï¸The MMC and FMC are amazing but seriously flawed and morally grey yet they work well together. This book has a lot of action, twists, turns and gives you the “should I like you vibes”.If you like vampires with hunger game trials then this is for you! Fair warning though the trials are very descriptive and you see a lot of violence.Spice: 4 : Innuendos, sexual thoughts/desires, open door scenes.Language: 3 : F word is a constant by the FMC and MMC. Use of own world cussing.

No, you donât understand. I am obsessed. I donât even remember the last time I was this invested in and consumed by a fantasy series. This might be one of my new favorite adult fantasy series EVER. This book has left me speechless so bear with me as I try to write a coherent review. This book was recommended to me by my friends so I went in blind (I didnât even read the blurb) and they did not steer me wrong!!First off, the writing was magical. Broadbentâs writing style was truly beautiful, her storytelling was everything I could hope for. The worldbuilding was complex but easy to understand. The characters! THE FREAKING CHARACTERS! Wow, Iâm in awe. Oraya is probably one of my favorite female main characters. I loved her inner dialogue. She was badass, at times vulnerable and human in a place that didnât allow her to be. I loved seeing her grow so much throughout the book. Raihn was everything one could want in a love interest: swoon worthy, smart, hot, protective. Their banter was amazing, they had me giggling and kicking my feet up in the air. I love them so so much. Even the side characters were interesting, not one character felt flat for me.This book is action packed, so much so that sometimes I felt like I couldnât even breathe and my heart was beating so fast it was insane. The pacing of this book was honestly perfect, there was always something happening.I need the second book in my hands right this second!!If youâre looking for your next adult fantasy book I hope you give this one a chance. You will not be disappointed. Trust me.

If you are a fan of the Romantasy genre with a headstrong and fierce female main character who can show vulnerability, then I highly recommend The Serpent and the Wings of Night. If your biggest hesitation is the presence of vampires, don’t let that stop you. I’m not a fan of vampire books anymore (I used to be, but got tired) and I DEVOURED this book. What you get: Action, romantic tension, banter, violence, betrayal, friendship, self-discovery and a swoony main male character who knows how to appreciate a fierce woman… what a ride! I finished it last night and will be starting book 2 today. Although book 1 doesn’t end in a painful cliffhanger (thank you for those last few chapters at the end), it does end at a pivotal point in the main character’s life and you’ll want to know immediately what happens next.ABOUT THE SERIES: This is book 1 of a duet. There are multiple books in the world of “Crowns of Nyaxia” but Oraya’s story is told in 2 books. The other books in the series delve into the stories of other characters (from what I can tell of the descriptions of the other books in the series).GENRE, FLOW, WRITING: Yes, this is a story about vampires but it doesn’t read like Paranormal at all. It really reads like a Romantasy. It’s Hunger Games meets ACOTAR and keeps you on your toes from start to finish. The flow was perfect, world building is gradually incorporated throughout the story, and holy smokes, it is so action packed. Great quality writing with a perfect flow and characters that you can love, admire and respect. It hit all of my marks!TECHNICALITIES:- 1st person POV (FMC)- Past Tense- Book divided in 7 parts, all of which start with a chapter in her past, from childhood to her teenage years- SPICE LEVEL: There are 2 sex scenes in this book and they are descriptive on page. Satisfying for those of us who love spice in their romance novels but not overwhelmingly so that it takes over the story or feels gratuitous. Those who don’t like reading descriptive sex, can easily skip those 2 parts.RED FLAGS, WARNINGS, AUDIENCE: Violence, death, killing as a sport, war, language, gore, mutilation, descriptive sex on the page.MY 5-STAR CRITERIA: I rated this book 5 stars because I definitely have a hangover and will be purchasing the audiobook format and possibly grab a hard cover copy to put in my collection of favorite reads. I will be reading this series again and again for sure! I binge read the last half of the book in one day. I literally read from 48% to the end in one day because I couldn’t put it down.
