Small and compact compost bin- no bags are included
The Umbra Bellwood Kitchen Compost Bin is a compact size and fits neatly on the counter. It comes with a sticker hook so it can be mounted on a wall or inside a cabinet, but I choose to keep it on the counter for easy access. The top lifts off and does not snap into place so if it tips over the contents would spill out too. This is to be used with compost bags for easy clean up and has a place in the back to tuck in the bag so it stays in place (but does not come with any bags). It’s dishwasher safe, but the handle must be removed first. The lid is loose and there’s a hole in the back so any food that is left for a long time will start to smell and it will linger- again why bags should be used because rotting food in a bin without a bag would leech into the plastic and stain it… just like trash. I wouldn’t use a trash can without a liner either. It’s expensive considering it’s such small size and it’s plastic, but would be a good deal with a coupon.

A bit smaller bin than I envisioned.
This small compost bin has a few pros and cons.Pros:It has a neat, clean appearance. It is small enough to not take up excessive space on your counter or inside a cabinet. It is dishwasher safe, although the wooden handle must be removed first.Cons:It really is quite small, with the actual inside dimensions of the bin being only 5âW x 9.5âL x 7âD. So although it will hold a 6L compost bag, the labeling on the wrapper shows that the bin will only hold 4L. Iâve attached a picture of an average medium-sized apple in the bin to try to provide a reference image.I guess overall I like this bin, and think it will probably do its job. But Iâm not sure that the $30 asking price isnât a bit higher than I feel is warranted for a fairly simple plastic compost bin.

Good quality compost bin with handle. You can leave on countertop or hang mount it!
Unfortunately my compost bin was missing the handle when it was sent to me. It’s still usable but it would have been nice to have the handle for easy carry. This compost bin is of great quality (fit and finish) and I like the fact that you get to choose where to leave or mount it. It comes with a surface prep pad which has a cleaning solvent. The prep pad is if you decide to mount it vertically on a surface as you get an adhesive backed plastic mount for hanging. Since mine does not have a handle, I opted to hang the compost bin under my kitchen sink cabinet. I am using the appropriate 4L (1 gallon) green compost bin bags with it and it’s working great!

Nice-looking, generic plastic waste bin.
Looks good on my countertop and it is the perfect size to hold a few days worth of compostable material for my household. I used a friendâs compost bin and theirs had a heavy lid with a charcoal sachet in the top to reduce odors. This has no features that will prevent odors from escaping so Iâll have to be more selective about what gets thrown in this bin.Itâs nice-looking with a removable handle and removable top rim but itâs a generic plastic can. Thereâs nothing that makes this a compost bin vs. a countertop trash bin. I removed a star for the absence of features that will help minimize odors.

Works, Slightly Awkward Design
I was fairly pleased overall with this compost bin but it ended up being slightly awkward. It comes with minimal packaging and no additional accessories except for the wall mounting bracket. It can hold a six-liter plastic bag and features a lid that flips up to help seal the smells in. As far as the bin goes, it works as intended and even has a small hole for tucking bags in securely. However, I did find that the bin itself was a bit awkward since it has a handle that, although removeable, is somewhat redundant. It makes it look chic, but I honestly found it just odd since you will realistically take the bag out and not the entire bin.Aside from that, the bin is sturdily made with thick plastic walls made from recycled plastic and worth using if you don’t mind spending the premium. It looks nicer in the photos since it does feel cheaper in-person.

Just ok…
For the $30 asking price, it’s an ok bin. This is replacing a cheapie Ikea bin that has a simple flip top lid and I’m not so sure this compost-specific item is much better. If you have a specific need to hang the bin, need a handle, and/or use it with a bag, this may be a good option. Plastic quality is ok as is the wooden handle. The white color will likely stain when in contact with all of your food and coffee grounds, but that remains to be seen for now. I’ll likely revert back to my cheap bin.

Cute, Functional, but Does Not Fully Seal
The compost bin is cute, with a real wood handle and additional attachment if you want to put it inside a cabinet, but it does not fully seal, which means some smells do come out.It is very easy to clean.
