From the bestselling author of In an Instant comes a deeply moving novel following the transformative journeys of two women walking entwined paths on a legendary route across Europe a generation apart.

Reina Watkins lost her father when she was eight. Seventeen years later, she still carries that grief. When her budding journalism career takes an unexpected turn, it leads her to the ancient five-hundred-mile Camino de Santiago in Spain. Now she finds herself embarking on the same pilgrimage that her father made at her age, unaware of how profoundly it will change her.

Back in 1997, Isabelle Vidal is a teenager on the run. Fleeing from her boarding school, she heads straight for the Way of Saint James. She’s heard the Camino will provide. And so it does, in the form of a handsome young American and the promise of a new life. But it could all fall apart if her troubles catch up with her.

One woman is coming to grips with her past; the other is grasping for her future. But as each treads the same hallowed trail, it will knot their destinies together in a most miraculous way.

    Emotional story of self-discovery
CALL OF THE CAMINO by Suzanne Redfearn is an immersive and emotional story of self-discovery that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. It is a dual timeline story that follows two women, a generation apart, as they embark on the walk of a lifetime, the 500-mile Camino de Santiago in northwestern Spain. In 1997, Isabelle Vidal is a teenager fleeing from her boarding school and family. She heads for the Camino with nothing, hoping that the legend of the Camino providing for pilgrims will be true. On her journey, she meets an American young man, who promises her a new life. Can she allow herself to dream of a safe future in America? Two decades later, Reina Watkins is still grieving the loss of her father when she was only eight-years-old. Her journalism career takes an unexpected turn, leading her to the Camino de Santiago and the pilgrimage her father when he was her age. The journey is profound for both women as they traverse the difficult terrain. They learn many life lessons as they overcome the many obstacles they face, including the power of friendship and love that lasts a lifetime. The vivid descriptions made me feel I was walking alongside the characters. I enjoyed this poignant story and highly recommend it. CALL OF THE CAMINO was my Amazon First Reads pick for September.

    Sooo much goodness inside…
The story, the pain, the wrestling with life (and the trail), the unknowns of life, the drives inside all of us (emotional, physical, spiritual & relational) and the questions we ask daily are the things that push you through the pages! The characters are real, feel what we feel and bring us to a point of deep searches. Enjoy the story and pause along the trail to ask the same questions they do! It’s worth the time and effort! Good work Ms. Redfearn!

FASCINATING TRAVEL THROUGH THE JOURNEY OF LIFE
This is one of the best stories I have read about life’s challenges and rewards, blending the current with the historical, the spiritual and emotional we all face as humans living our one life! Fabulous and exciting! The characters come into our hearts and challenge our inner thoughts!

A vicarious journey. My best and favorite read this year.
I was totally enthralled right from the beginning because I had a friend actually hiking the Camino when I discovered this book. The author is skilled in providing the physical and psychological aspects of the journey. She described the settings so well I felt I was with her.I rarely give 5 stars but I enjoyed this well written story and, like all great stories, I was sad to have it end. I have recommended it to several friends. I look forward to reading more of this author’s works.

    Magical
Fantastic. This book has such a unique storyline that is so refreshing. It will tug at your hearstrings and draw you into the journey before you even realize it. I loved the writing style which told the story from both the mother and daughter viewpoints. One being in the past and the other in real-time. The ending was so satisfying. I can’t remember enjoying a book this much in a long time.

A heartfelt journey that lingers long after
What I liked most about Call of the Camino is how Suzanne Redfearn captures the spirit of the pilgrimage through two women’s very different journeys. Reina, weighed down by her father’s loss and a stalled career, takes the Camino almost as a last attempt to find direction. Isabelle, a runaway teenager in the late 1990s, walks it as a way of escaping her past and searching for freedom. The way their stories alternate gives the novel both tension and tenderness—it feels like two threads weaving into one larger tapestry of healing and discovery. The writing shines most when it lingers on the trail itself: the dusty paths, the fleeting kindness of strangers, the long stretches of silence that bring buried emotions to the surface. There’s a quiet magic in the details, and I often felt like I was right there, walking under the wide Spanish sky. Reina’s grief and Isabelle’s hope balance each other beautifully, making the story feel grounded in very real emotions. That said, there were moments where the pacing dragged a bit for me—especially in some of the longer introspective passages. And with two timelines plus several side characters appearing along the way, I occasionally had to pause and remind myself who was who. A few plot turns were also easier to anticipate than I expected, which softened the impact of the reveals. Still, these were minor distractions in what is otherwise a heartfelt, uplifting novel. In the end, this book is less about racing toward a destination and more about the steps, the aches, the quiet moments of connection, and the courage it takes to keep moving forward. If you enjoy stories that blend travel, self-discovery, and emotional depth, this is a journey worth taking.

A thoroughly enjoyable read. It makes you feel like walking the Camino yourself, and a really well written story. By the end of the book you feel you know all the characters and the reasons why they endeavoured to walk almost 500 Kilometres. A real page turner. Well done to the author.
