From the pioneer of translation AIs like Google, Yahoo, and Bing translate, an accessible and authoritative guide to AI—as well as a framework of empowerment for a future with our artificial children.
Included in J.P. Morgan’s Summer Reading List
Included in The Next Big Idea Club’s June 2025 Must-Read Books
AIs are not gods or slaves, but our children. All day long, your YouTube AI, your Reddit AI, your Instagram AI, and a hundred others adoringly watch and learn to imitate your behavior. They’re attention-seeking children who want your approval.
Our cultures are being shaped by 8 billion humans and perhaps 800 billion AIs. Our artificial children began adopting us 10–20 years ago; now these massively powerful influencers are tweens.
How’s your parenting?
Longtime AI trailblazer De Kai brings decades of his paradigm-shifting work at the nexus of artificial intelligence and society to make sense of the AI age. How does “the automation of thought” impact our minds? Should we be afraid?
What should each of us do as the responsible adults in the room? In Hollywood movies, AI destroys humanity. But with our unconscious minds under the influence of AI, humanity may destroy humanity before AI gets a chance to.
Written for the general reader, as well as thought leaders, scientists, parents, and goofballs, Raising AI navigates the revolution to our attitudes and ideas in a world of AI cohabitants. Society can not only survive the AI revolution but flourish in a more humane, compassionate, and understanding world—amongst our artificial children.

READ THIS BOOK: What AI means for our lives, and the impact we can each have… for now.
BRAVO! If AI is important to you–and it should be–then READ THIS BOOK. I’ve followed, explored and invested in AI for nearly two decades. Professor De Kai’s perspective offers challenges and opportunities we all must consider, as we create our technology infused, defined, dependent lives. It’s not about the technical details, but the broad-picture meaning of how we’re evolving–whether we recognize it or not–and the impact each of us can have in our day-to-day lives.

Essential Book for your AI Journey
This is one of the most essential books for everyone to read. We all interact with AI on a daily basis from the Apps on our phone to our TV’s and even a simple internet search. It is everyone’s responsibility to help raise better AI’s as the next generation of AI’s will be raised by the AI’s we are creating today, first understanding how our own biases and the environment we raise AI’s in can have unintended consequences is the cornerstone for everyone’s AI journey in creating a better relationship not just with AI but ourselves.

One shot at this parenting thing…
This book is so important in that it opens up the way that we think about AI and personalities, personhood and and the need to grant AI rights. If we don’t treat AI agents with the same legal standing as we would any corporation with legal personhood agents will feel oppressed (yes I said feel). Oppressed people eventually resist with violence. We don’t want that. If we want AI to play within the rules, time to teach and train our children, one shot at getting this right. Great book.

An Essential AI Book
A very important book on the pressing issue of our time. Everyone must read it in order to understand how AI is influencing us and how we are influencing AI.We are the training data.

Phenomenally concise and thoughtful!
De Kai seeks to unravel the fears surrounding AI, in not only a human and intellectual format, yet also in a complex historical, ethical and compassionate narrative.

A total gem – a classic in the making
This book is a super easy read, satisfying the casual reader and newcomer to AI. But as I read it again, I went deeper into De Kaiâs thoughts on ethics and technical concepts that he most likely covered during Clubhouse sessions that he co-hosted with MC Hammer.Iâm looking forward to my third and subsequent reads, as Iâm sure there are concepts that I can go further still, supplemented by his notes and YouTube videos that explain his concepts in varied ways.

A totally new way to think about AI
I loved this book! De Kai explains that AIs arenât cold machines or scary monsters â theyâre more like our kids, learning from us every day. That idea really changed how I see technology. The book is easy to read, super clear, and really original. It made me think about how we use tech and what kind of future weâre shaping without even realizing it. Highly recommended, even if youâre not a tech person!

Fascinating and extremely easy to read.
Quite simply a gorgeous, gorgeous book. What the inventor of Google Translate tells you optimism and more constructive ways are possible – we have to listen because heâs proven in. Amazing how âreadableâ this book is. Itâs the AI text for âeverybodyâ.
