Outstanding coffee for 1, easy to use and clean.
I bought this to use in addition to my electric drip coffee maker. I drink 1-2 mugs of coffee every morning and while the electric drip makes acceptable coffee it is more suitable for brewing larger pots. I buy whole bean coffee and grind my own beans (my next investment will be a burr grinder). I am not a coffee aficionado but I like a good fresh cup of coffee – my favorite beans are Eight O’Clock original. I saw the Chemex for the first time on a friend’s social media post and was intrigued. I did debate purchasing the larger Chemex, but decided that for larger groups/company the electric drip would work better and therefore purchased the smaller unit for my daily use. I did watch a few videos before I tried it the first time and that was helpful. The coffee it produces is wonderful – it is full of flavor and has no bitterness. This model uses the half-moon filters, I do not find them difficult to use. Obviously this takes a little more effort than flipping a switch on an electric drip, but for me it is worth the effort. The difference in time/effort for me is that I have to add the water in 1-2 batches since it doesn’t drip quickly enough for me to add it all at once. Note that the most you can pour into this model is 2 cups of water (2- 8 oz cups) – I suppose it is called a 3 cup because most coffee makers assume a ‘cup’ serving to be around 6 oz – but it is just right for me. Since there is no burner to keep the coffee warm, I usually heat my second mugful in the microwave which works very well, there is no bitterness after reheating. I wash my unit every time I use it, it’s not difficult to untie the leather strap, remove the collar, clean it with a bottle brush and set it aside to air dry. The glass is dishwasher safe but since I don’t run my dishwasher every day and can quickly wash it by hand that wasn’t a big deal for me. I have found that I use fewer beans since purchasing the Chemex because I rarely throw any coffee down the drain – first because it tastes so good and secondly because I make only what I can drink.

Chemex makes great coffee even better!
I bought this size Chemex carafe to keep at my daughter’s house in Washington state. While I love some of the local coffee houses, I can’t get a cup of pour-over that makes me this happy. To anyone like me who feared they would have to give up coffee forever due to stomach discomfort, you need to try Chemex and especially Chemex filters to remove the compounds in even organic coffee that cause bitterness and stomach problems.Chemex is the reason I still get to drink coffee. The glass is thick and not cheap. Follow the instructions for finding the correct grind for your drip rate. I liked the half moon filters best for this smaller size. Chemex is very easy to use, and the carafe is dishwasher safe after removing the collar. The design looks stunning on my cabinet.

    Simply the BEST
There is simply no better way to make coffee. No hidden parts that can get all moldy like an electric drip machine, simple to clean, elegant and good looking on the counter, and the most important thing – the coffee TASTES AMAZING. I am a complete coffee snob and this is THE BEST COFFEE you will ever drink. I grind my own beans but this makes fabulous coffee using almost any kind of coffee – it’s that amazing.Tips:–Be SURE to use only the Chemex filters – don’t use any other brand – there really is a difference and it’s worth the few extra pennies to get the best.– boil water in an electric kettle. While it’s boiling, fold your filter and put it in the chemix. As soon as it’s shut itself off, fill your mug with hot water to heat it, and then pour a little water over the filter to wet it. Discard the water.–I use the grid they sell at the Chemex site on my electric stovetop burner and I turn the burner on “low”, and I put the Chemex on that burner while I’m making the coffee. This keeps the coffee piping hot throughout the process.–Put the coffee in the already wet filter and pour a little water over it to wet the grounds. Let it sit 10 seconds. Now fill the filter with water, and repeat as many times as you need to, until you have the desired amount of coffee.–Discard filter and grounds–pour coffee into warmed mugEnjoyThere is virtually no cleanup! Just rinse the Chemex with some water (I never even use dish soap or anything – I just rinse with whatever hot water is left in the kettle and let it air dry. Once in a great while I put the Chemex in the dishwasher, but this isn’t even really necessary.
