NOTE: The 71-inch axle length exceeds the dimensions of the 4’x4′ deck. Please ensure the supporting beam has adequate length. The rack is compatible with 12”, 16”, or 24” ceiling joist spacing (note: not compatible with 18-inch joist spacing). The wire deck reaches its highest point at approximately 10 inches below the ceiling.

Capable RTT storage. Possible on a pitched ceiling with some creativity.
I’m very impressed with the build quality and functionality of this joist. I initially didn’t think that I could use it because I have an unfinished garage with only exposed trusses, and this is built for a finished garage, but after some careful thought and consulting with an engineer friend, I came up with a way to use it on my pitched ceiling. In case anyone is in the same boat, I used:- (2) 2×6 spreader boards, each anchored to 4 trusses to spread the load- Reinforced eye bolts, 3/8” chain & turnbuckles that attach to the “subframe”- The subframe is 2×4 and steel framing brackets, made to the mounting specs of the joistOnce level, the joist itself worked exactly as it is supposed to. There was a slight learning curve – have weight on the platform when rolling it up/down especially at the beginning while the cables don’t have “memory” (the instructions advise this, I guess I just didn’t believe it).All in all, it does what I needed it to do: helps me remove and store my GoFSR Odyssey RTT and awning (180ish lbs).

    Handy and convenient storage
This item is really neat for storing items in your garage, provided you have sufficient height. Fortunately, I do and purchased this for my hardtop for my vintage sports car. It’s large enough to accommodate my hardtop and safely stores it out of the way, but is readily available for times I choose to place my hardtop on my car. It’s easy to use, raises and lowers by attaching my battery powered drill or using the crank that comes with it. Its mechanism appears very sturdy and is designed to raise and lower evenly so stored items don’t fall off and is convenient to use, not at all cumbersome. Comes with a template and directions, which make it easy to hang, once you locate the ceiling joists. So overall, a nice product and reasonably priced.

installation instructions are iffy, but the end result is quite good
Like many review mentioned, the instructions aren’t the best. If you’re handy and have experience assembling modestly complicated projects, you should be able to get through it. This is one time I’d suggest actually reading the instructions all the way through at least once before beginning. Knowing a few of the warnings ahead of time can save you some frustration (like the requirement of locating the lift/lower controls). The template wasn’t helpful in my case (exposed rafters, but running perpendicular to the direction I needed to mount the unit), but I was able to take measurements from the template and work out the mounting locations on my own. Once you get the four mounting brackets installed in the right locations, you’re 90% of the way done. The remaining steps are pretty straightforward and easy to complete. Some reviews mentioned that the cables bunched up and didn’t wrap onto the spindles smoothly. The instructions are oddly worded there, but if you pay attention to how the cables attach to the spindle, you should be able to get them in the proper initial position. I think it helps if you actually have some weight on the shelf to keep the cables under tension when raising the unit. If one cable is slightly longer than the others (as was the case with mine), it may help to hold tension on it with your hands while raising the unit in order to get it to wrap smoothly. After a few ups and downs, with little adjustments here and there, I was eventually able to get all cables to wrap smoothly. My hope is that they’ll develop a little bit of “memory” in the wrapped position and will return to that orientation more easily on their own in the future. I’m using this as a system to remove and store the hard top for my classic Bronco, so they will spend the entire summer wrapped about the spindle in the hot garage, so we’ll see.But the overall design of the unit is quite good. The manufacturing tolerances are also accurate – I didn’t have any issues fitting the pieces together at all. The cable system is fully redundant, so more than one cable would need to break before there’s any danger of the shelf falling (*extremely* unlikely). The shelf is strong and the system handles significant weight with no issues. The option to disconnect the spinning handle and attach a power drill to the actuating rod was an excellent bonus. All things considered, I’m glad I got this unit and look forward to many years of removing, storing, and reinstalling my hard top as a simple (single-person) operation.

Best solution for the price, but a couple of changes would make it better.
It’s certainly cheaper than trying to build your own. The hand crank with option to connect a drill is a great idea so you don’t have to worry about having to run power to a motorized unit. If you choose to crank by hand, it will take you forever. It’s sturdy and feels safe. The cables are plenty thick to hold the load. The platform made of of steel wire is sufficient. I don’t think you’d want too beefy of a platform because people would be tempted to load too much weight. They did make some design features to accomodate a 1-person installation. Although, I think there would have been a better way to it with less parts. One of the things I would change is getting rid of the 2nd set of cables. It appears the gray cables are redundant in case the black cables fail. I don’t see why this is necessary if you’re using strong enough cable. And the cable ends are crimped with 4 ferrules. I don’t see how that could possibly come loose. But since you’re using a 2nd set of cables, make the cables the same length. The gray cables are slightly longer than the black cables. The slack was causing one of the gray cables to crosses itself as it winds up onto the bar, which causes that corner to wind up faster than the others. So, then you have a lopsided platform when it’s lifted. I had to use zip ties at the bottom of the gray cables to take out the slack. (I need to think of a better way to take out that slack.)There should be some adjustment, like turnbuckles or longer eye bolts. If your joists aren’t exactly 48″ apart and you have to widen or narrow the placement of 2 mounts, it will cause one side to be higher or lower than the other. The side with the winding rod is a fixed length, but if you move the mounts on the other side closer to the winding rod by 2 inches, that side will sit lower by 2 inches. I used shackles to add length to one side to even it out.

    Excellent garage space saver
Excellent product. I used it to store a lawn mower and some summer furniture and cleared a garage space for 3rd cap parking! I am going to buy two more for bikes and other equipment storage 🤗
