good to go or as a foundation for custom assisted tilt hack
Your not going to find a better bang for buck deal for a tilt away 4 bike rack.As it comes out of the box it’s definitely good to go but can be so much better with a little bit of simple diy additions.For less than 80 bucks this is really a well built item.Especially compared to the absolute garbage most of the 4 bike racks in the sub 200 dollar range are .The average rack is made of LOW CARBON thin wall low grade steel tubing finished in a low quality powder coating that UV degrades in a year and plastics that start giving up soon after.. straps are thin …buckles cheaply made and generally they are a scary proposition with 4 bikes (35 to 50 lbs a piece average) … That’s potentially 140 to 200 lbs hanging static … Think about the dynamic loads that much weight generates when in motion hanging a few feet behind a vehicle on what is essentially a lever… swaying around behind a car over bumps around turns… Under hard braking … Most I have inspected in person were not confidence inspiring.You want something constructed from quality materials.I was pleasantly surprised, basic heavy duty product , add a few heavy duty bungee cords and some pool noodle or pipe insulation foam zip tied to supplement the rubber pads on the 4 bike racks and it’s good to go.I feel like it’s well built enough to justify using it as the foundation for some custom welding /fabrication .I am one of those people who have a literal fabrication shop in the garage and my original plan was to fabricate from scratch a hinged swing away+ tilt down 4 bike hanging type carrier for the wife’s newer nissan rogue sl awd. .I liked the form and function of a Carrier similar to shuttle vehicle racks at mountain bike parks.Well , needed a rack sooner than later so I studied available products and settled on this due to its one beam rack area with bolt on racks … I’m currently fabricating replacement bolt on racks that are tailored to fit our bike frames perfectly while maximizing clearance below and eliminating much of the interference between the bikes . . Second mod is adding a parallel linkage bar pivoting on 2 pairs of plates I’ll weld on .. .. as the vertical tube pivots down the upper horizontal rack end will pivot upward at the same rate … staying parallel to the hitch end .. think of an articulating desk lamp or the lifting arm of a hydraulic car jack .. A small hydraulic ram cylinder will control lowering and assist raising…. I’ll probably do a rising rate linkage at the ram end just to minimize ram travel and amount of pumps needed to lift bikes from the low position to the fully up and pinned position… the same pin to lock the pivots arrangement secures everything when loaded up and moving…adding a tensioning adjuster horizontally mounted under the receiver end .. a pair of threaded bungs welded to the bottom of the square tube to thread in bolts .. tip of bolts push on the hitches flange to eliminate any slop ..

Over 1400 miles logged so far in two states and it works GREAT!
I previously tried to use one of the “universal” style bike racks that will fit a passenger car or an SUV and didn’t even begin to trust it to drive across town, much less on the long trips I was going on. I bought this in preparation for an out-of-state camping trip to the mountains my girlfriend and I were going on, and it arrived on time as advertised. Assembly was very easy and took maybe 15 minutes total with a few basic hand tools (allen keys, socket set, and wrenches). I have an extra trailer wiring harness and I may see about wiring a brake light up to attach to the flat plate on the end rather than just having a red reflector on it. I’ve driven over 1400 miles in two weeks with the bike rack on my 4Runner and had zero issues of any kind, with and without bikes on the rack. I’d say my road time was split 80% highway (70-90mph), 15% twisty mountain roads (lots of up and down hill, sharp curves, braking and acceleration), and 5% off-road driving, and the bikes didn’t move around in the rack at all. The wheels or handlebars of either bike never contacted my vehicle, either, and during the trip I secured them in every one of the four slots, just to make sure (my bike has 28″ wheels and hers has 26″ I believe). You may have to remove water bottle attachments though, my Bontrager bottle cage barely fit on the rack (I never use it anyways, so I removed it when we got home, no big deal).The mounts that the bikes sit in are VERY secure and attach to the rack itself with crush washers and lock nuts. The velcro straps that wrap around the bike frame seem to be of good quality and absolutely hold the bikes 100% still. The vertical portion of the rack folds down with the pull of the hinge pin to about a 45 degree angle to allow you to open your rear door/hatch with ease, and mine cleared it with ample room to spare. This was great when it came time to unload the car at our camping destination and for loading it back up to head home again.I only found a few “negatives” during the assembly and use of this bike rack, but none of them were enough of a problem to distract from the rating based on things that actually mattered to me. The first was that some of the nuts that went with the actual bike holders (which attach to the rack itself) were metric and the bolt heads were standard/SAE. This wasn’t a big deal, just a bit of an annoyance.The second downside is that the top hinge pin (which allows the part of the rack the bikes sit on to fold down so it doesn’t stick out two feet behind your vehicle) will only insert into the vertical part of the rack from the left side when the rack is folded. When the rack is extended out to the rear, it will fit from the right side. Again, just an annoyance, nothing that would affect the usability.The third is there is some play in the fit between the mount and my hitch receiver. When there is no load (bike) on the rack and you move it by hand, it seems very loose. I didn’t notice any noise or movement while driving with the rack on my vehicle, whether empty or with bikes loaded.The fourth downside is it seems like the receiver pin that holds the mount into the hitch receiver itself is a smaller size than the one for my regular 2″ ball hitch mount. When I assembled it and put the rack into the receiver, the regular pin wouldn’t go through. I haven’t removed it to compare them yet though, so I could be incorrect and maybe just had a bad angle on it.Overall, I absolutely recommend this rack. I was blown away at the quality of the product for the price (seems like a comparable rack would cost $100-200+ at a bike shop or other online stores) and I’ve had nothing but good luck with it thus far with quite a bit of drive time over varied terrain. Buy with confidence!

Good rack, but kinda tricky to fit bikes so close together, and women’s bikes have close bars.
Pros:- I can finally can get out bikes places without worrying about the drive.- High quality- Secure- Easy assemblyCons:- It is annoying fitting women’s bike with the closer together bars. I could barely clear the reflector and am considering removing that (bolts on the end). I had the same problem for a child bike, especially a girl’s bike.- The bikes are so close together that pedals and handle bars have to strategically go between other bike spokes, which is kinda tricky while holding up the bike and getting it into position. I’m getting used to it, but the first time I used it, it took some fiddling.- The main bolt is threaded, which takes longer to feed through when you are placing/removing from your vehicle. Why didn’t they use an unthreaded bolt like the others? It still has the pin to hold it on.- My package was missing a locking nut. I had to run to the store to buy another one. Uses a metric size (M6-1.0mm), so I didn’t have any handy.Other thoughts:- You can lower it so you can open a truck tailgate, but be careful not to let it fall or pinch your fingers. I question if in the lowered position if it could slip farther than it should if under pressure, but I could be wrong.- There is a bit more play in the bars than I expected, but not anything to worry about.

That was a pain to find a M16 bolt with a lock. I finally found this one and it fit perfecly on my Meeviz bike rack to replace the original M16 non-locking bolt.So I guess it will fit fine if you have to replace any M16 bolt on a 2Â inch hitch.Quality seems really good, worth it, will buy again.Only con : it not come with any washer, so you have to use your old one or go buy one at the store.
