    Worth about 99 cents.
This guy is just plugging his own type of roofing. He is pretty well educated about roofing. The part about ice damming is very good information. However, Aluminum roofing is really just not feasible nor advisable in most states. Hail will chew an aluminum roof up, and they are impossible to get serviced. Standing seam steel is a fantastic roof, and some composition roofs are very good. He also slams salesmen as if he has lost a lot of sales to them, which sucks, I know. But with out sales no business would have much business, and American companies are built on a good sales force. The fact is, all roof types carry an ASTM rating for testing and serve a purpose. I have seen a 3TAB 20 year roof last 25 years or more.He also completely ignored natural slate roofing, which is the best and has been for centuries. Unfortunately we can’t all afford a slate roof, or metal, for that matter.

    A waste of money.
This purchase was a waste of money. Much of the content is simply the author throwing out claims about all other forms/types of roofing or else bragging about himself. Save your money.

A Book About Roofs That Covers It All–Almost!
While looking for another book on my Kindle Book Shelf, I came across Mr. Knowlton’s book. I got it sometime ago because I had an interest in metal roofs (even though I wasn’t ready to do any serious shopping.) Now the time has come for some serious consideration–Spring of 2014?He didn’t say much about my favorite, genuine slate, but I’m sure my current balloon frame cottage wouldn’t support it anyway. (It will have to wait for my Prince Charming’s help me when we build our dream cottage–an authentic English stone cottage.)The book was a pleasant and entertaining read. I especially liked it because it tells which products are best for duribilty and certain climates, and WHY. I also liked the books objectivity, the beautiful pictures, and the fact pros and cons were given in regards to the various types of installations,Unlike another reviewer, I found it charming when the author talked about his other books–his fiction. (How romantic! A roofing man who’s wife is an expert also. Besides this, he writes historical fiction and believes as I do, that it’s difficult to find roofers who know how to properly install wood shingle roofs. (An expert I discovered in “This Olde House Journal” said the same thing twenty years ago when my family installed cedar shakes on our gazebo roof.)I especially liked his saying I could do half a roof at one time. And still another question on my mind was answered: did I have to remove my old 1896 roof? I think he is saying I don’t and it is better for the enviornment not to. I plan to write him later and ask specifics. Many thanks to the author for helping me figure out what I am going to do–well done!

A must read before you attempt it
I bought this book to help me make a decision about whether or not I should attempt putting a metal roof on my garage shed. This definitely answered that question. I do not believe I will attempt it. I think the author did a very good job of presenting how to do it and the problems one should anticipate. I would have given a five but I needed some guidelines as to what type of person should attempt this job some more instruction and recommendations about roofing nailers. Other than that, if you are planning to put in a metal roof read this first.

Only pertains to metal shingled roofs.
I am looking to put a new metal panel roof on my house and I thought this might help. Not so much. It was very informative about metal shingles and things pertaining to that but doesn’t mention anything about metal panel roofing except that it should be on a barn and not a house. I would keep your money.

more a pamphlet than a book
The information in the pamphlet is okay, and worth the dollar charged, but I hesitate to call it a book. There was some useful information related to metal roofs, as well as advertisements for the author’s other fictional/fantasy books, which I found to be quite odd. The other books have nothing to do with roofs, so it was unprofessional to include ads for other, unrelated works. You will find much more helpful information in other roofing books such as the Black and Decker roofing book, or by searching Google for “metal roofs”, but it was still worth the $0.99 charged for a summary of information on metal roofs.
