About Savvy Cyber Kids

Growing up in a digital world, our children are adopting technologies—touching, seeing and interacting with them, and ultimately, understanding the world through the lens of these tools—at younger and faster rates than ever before. As a parent, it’s worthwhile to pause and think about what this means for children at all ages, considering everything from brain development to socialization, physical safety and, of course, cyber ethics and cyber safety.

There was a time when the childhood lessons of “don’t talk to strangers,” and the “golden rule” were enough to keep kids safe. These lessons could be applied to more mature circumstances as the child aged and because kids learned them young, they were better equipped to make safe decisions when they got older. But times have changed. Technology happened. Today, kids have unfettered access to internet-enabled screens, likened to taking the front door off the family home and inviting strangers—potentially dangerous ones—in to play.

Parenting has never been easy. But parenting in the Digital Age has brought with it new challenges that must be addressed to ensure the health and well-being of our kids. The mistakes our children can make—posting something that gets them kicked off a team or refused entry to the college of their choice or connecting with a child predator who grooms them over time—has the potential to haunt them for the rest of their lives, or worse yet, put them in a life or death situation.

The reality is that there is no one-stop prescriptive formula for keeping kids safe online. Technology changes very quickly, so the approach of merely advising on the apps or platforms to use/avoid or specific direction on parental controls is not effective enough. Our children need adults guiding them towards safe and appropriate behavior. They need their parents and caregivers to treat the virtual world like the playground that it is and establish safety protocols early in child development. Parents then must refresh these lessons again and again as the child ages.

Savvy Cyber Kids (SCK), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to enable youth, families and school communities to be empowered by technology, recognizes that children are “Digital Naives” who, without intervention, completely lack understanding of the implications of their digital actions.

Founded in 2007 by Internet security expert, noted speaker and author Ben Halpert, Savvy Cyber Kids provides resources for parents and teachers to educate children as they grow up in a world surrounded by technology by teaching numerous Cyber Safety & Ethics concepts such as personal Internet safety, bully response, technology balance, digital reputation and privacy.

As children grow older they interact with technology in a variety of ways, often without supervision. The reality is that when children can access the internet independently, it’s like taking the front door off the house and inviting strangers in—potentially toxic ones—to interact with them. Despite what the media will say, the danger is not with a specific app or game—it’s the decisions and the actions children are taking in these apps and games that may be dangerous. Savvy Cyber Kids teaches today’s children—from preschool to high school—how to remain safe and be empowered to make appropriate decisions in the online world, by engaging the commitment of parents, teachers and the community to raise awareness and impart a sense of Cyber Safety & Cyber Ethics into the minds of children.

Great tips for parents of kiddos of all ages in very easy to understand format
This guide is organized by the age of your child, so it will be a guide you can turn to as your children age to keep them safe online and engage in conversations with them about what they’re doing online and what can be dangerous or unhealthy. As a parent of a preteen and teenager, I found it very helpful to jump start conversations, for example about gaming with strangers and sexting. Each section has conversation starters, interactive activities, and resources. Just be advised that it’s most helpful when used in conjunction with Savy Cyber Kids Book 1 (The Family Gets a Computer), Book 2 (Defeat of the Cyberbully), and Book 3 (Adventures Beyond the Screen).

    A must-have for parents of on-line kids.
Adults today have witnessed the evolution of the internet and have navigated the inherent privacy and safety decisions for themselves. Are browser cookies okay? A/S/L? Do-not-track? Online dating? But as parents we must re-consider the internet with our children’s privacy and safety concerns in mind.”Digital Parenting by the Ages” makes this easy and convenient whether you are expecting or are wrangling a handful of tweens. This book takes the novel approach: each chapter is devoted to a different childhood age group. The book’s guidance expands as children grow. So if you have an eighth grader, you need only read the fourth chapter. Later in the school year you may get in front of next year’s challenges by comparing what you’ve already done with what guidance is to come in the fifth chapter.Of course, any mass media book is going to provide general guidance. As parents we must tailor the material to the individual needs of our children. With that, “Digital Parenting by the Ages” is a fair and comprehensive first step in responsible parenting in an online age.

Great reference guide on digital and internet safety
Another great book from Savvy Cyber Kids! We’ve purchased 3 story books from Savvy Cyber Kids and my kids loved them! I’ve read two of those books in my kids’ school and their classmates enjoyed the books too. For many parents and teachers, it can be difficult to know where to start in terms of educating kids on internet safety. The “Digital Parenting by the Ages” book addresses vital topics such as screen time balance, cyber bullying, cyber stranger, decision making and being responsible cyber citizens in a simple manner. The book categorizes research backed recommendations by age group. I can see this book being a reference guide for years to come.

A parents guide to raising children in the Internet Age
This is a fantastic, step by step, simple, guide that any parent can use to navigate how to keep their children safe from the perils of the internet. The SavvyCyberKids team lays out great guidance for each age group from infant to young adults. As a parent of two adults, I learned many of these lessons the hard way. I wish this book was available when my kids were young.
