Eric Layton, an engineer in the solar industry who installs solar panels, wrote this guide for readers that are trying to build their own solar or wind system. Using pictures, this do-it-yourself (DIY) solar and wind system was built with a battery back-up system. His new book is a comprehensive guide on the design, thought process, equipment, and technique on designing this DIY system. Using photographs taken throughout the building process, he covers why he chose certain components in addition to any issues building and installing. This book was written to help fellow solar and wind enthusiasts, as well as inspire those who would like to build their own solar and wind DIY system.

This is a great starter book with clear explanations and a lot of good pictures. It helped me a lot in understanding how to set up a system that included wind energy. The chapters were short but concise giving a firm starting point for anyone interested in having an off-grid system. Now that I have a reasonably firm grip on the language of photovoltaics, it’s time to dig deeper and more in depth study before launching into home power production! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who might have the same questions I had before reading this.

    Would not recommend
I think this book was a way to recuperate from the $10000 cost of this solar system. Another one star review states that this book is a project journal, and it is. I finished it in a few hours. Not much useful info, unless you want to know the cheapest price of panels 6 users ago.

This book contains many photographs but relies on readers accessing instruction videos on Youtube. If you want a wealth of practical information but do not want to watch videos on Youtube, then this book is not for you.Personally I found “DIY Solar Projects: How to Put the Sun to Work in Your Home” by Eric Smith to be a much more practical and useful book.

The author may have potential and may know what he is doing but he is not an author. Such book should not exist. First of all, it is not a Do-it-Yourself book. It is a “This is what we have done book.” There is nothing wrong with sharing his own experience but why mislead the reader from the beginning. I bought this book because I wanted information on how to do it myself, not on seeing a bunch of pictures on how he did it. They say to never judge a book by its cover. That is not quite true. This is one example where the author came up with a beautiful cover in order to compensate for the lack of content. I should have known better, being that it is a self published book. No publishing house would have ever published such a thing. The information (which is not very much) contained in this book along with the numerous pictures should have been put on a Website. A book is not a book simply because you write a few paragraphs on pages with a few pictures and bind the whole thing. And for the price he is asking! Buyer be ware, don’t get caught like I have.
