Planning your Heatwave Cable Install and Sizing

Planning for your Heatwave cable installation starts now!
Picking the right size Heatwave cable begins by measuring the size of the area you wish to heat, not the total size of the area. For example, if you have a 60 square foot bathroom, but are only heating 42 square feet. Knowing that you are heating about 42 square feet, Heatizon recommends buying a cable system where the square footage is as close to the middle range as possible. Since Heatwave cannot be cut or shortened, getting the correct size floor heating system is crucial. For the example of heating 42 square feet, the Heatwave floor heating cable for 32-60 would be perfect for that project.
It is always easier to find places you don’t want to heat than trying to squeeze a bigger mat into a small space!
Remember, the red Heatwave heating element cannot be cut or shortened!
Perfect for monitoring your Heatwave system during all phases of installation to add another layer of protection to your investment. While it doesn’t replace resistance testing, the damage alarm alerts you in the case that something accidently happens to your Heatwave system, You then can stop, locate and repair the damage before moving on with your installation!
Alarms come standard with Standard Heatwave 240 volt cable and mat kits, and all Deluxe and Premium Heatwave kits.

Heatwave Cable – path to installation

Measure & Determine Spacing
The first step for installing a Heatwave cable floor heating system is to determine the spacing for your project.
Get the length of your Heatwave CableDivide the size of your area by the length of the cable (EX: 35/154=.23)Times the result by 12. This is your spacing. (EX: .23×12= 2.76″)
If your calculation is less than 2″, choose a smaller Heatwave cable.
If your calculation is larger than 5″, choose a larger Heatwave cable.
Be sure to follow all the instructions in the Heatwave manual during installation.

Installing Strapping and/or Clips
Now that you have the Heatwave Cable spacing, install the cable straps where you intend the cable to turn. The straps should be on opposite ends of the space to be heated, perpendicular from the cable. Make sure the straps are securely attached to the subfloor to ensure your Heatwave cable doesn’t shift while being embedded.
If you are using clips or other methods to attach the cable to the floor, the cable can be fastened to the floor as you go while following the pre-determined spacing.
If using a product that the cable clips into, follow the instructions for installing that product first. Install the Heatwave floor heating cable as close as possible to the determined spacing.

Install the cable
Once the strapping is installed, begin to layout the cable in a serpentine pattern at the appropriate spacing. Best advice is to leave the cable loose in the strapping (don’t bend the tabs over the cable yet.) If you have to move or adjust the cable, having the tabs loose, allows this to go faster.
Once you have all the Heatwave cable loosely in the straps and have used the entire roll, now tighten the tabs in the strapping, not too tight, you don’t want to damage the cable. Tight enough to keep the cable from shifting.
Complete your Heatwave cable testing and continue with your flooring install.

Heatwave Steps To Install Success!

Get the Right Size
Be sure to order a Heatwave system for the area to BE HEATED, not the total area. The Heatwave heating element CANNOT be cut or shortened to a fit a space.
Smaller size systems are available to fit smaller areas.
Avoid performing any cutting/drilling tasks on a finished/partially finished floor that could cause damage to heating element.

Don’t Power on Until…
Do not power on the Heatwave System until it has been completely embedded in a cement-based compound (thinset/mortar/self-leveling) and that compound is completely dried.
Do not power on a Heatwave System to “test” or to dry out an embedding compound.

Completely Embed
The Heatwave cable MUST be completely embedded (unable to be seen) in a cement-based compound (thinset/mortar/self-leveling).
Both connection/junction points must also be fully embedded, the connection point at the end of the heating element and the connection point between the red heating cable and the black unheated (cold lead) cable.
Ensure that air pockets in mortar/thinset/self-leveling compound with exposed heating element, get fully filled-in.

Perform All Tests
Perform all required tests outlined in the installation manual at several stages throughout installation to ensure that heating element has not been damaged.
Failure to perform all the required tests at several stages can cause system damage to be missed which can lead to system errors, ground faults, non-functional systems, and unrepairable damage.
