Essentially an AirTag with a specialized case
The Hongtop tracker seems to operate essentially like an AirTag. Unfortunately it came with zero instructions, and the product had no information on it either. I gave this to my son to link to his account, using the instructions on the Amazon description page, and it paired just fine with his iPhone; now he can see the tracker’s location from the FindMy app. I carried it with me for a couple days to test it and got multiple notices from my phone that I had been moving in tandem with a tracking device, which again is comparable to what you’d expect with an AirTag.Personally I wouldn’t feel confident enough about the magnets to put this in the wheelwell of my vehicle; the magnets are about the strength of a good refrigerator magnet, and I’d be worried about it getting knocked off from road debris. I keep an AirTag inside my vehicle, and it works just fine for locating, so I would expect this to do the same (I will update). The case itself is magnetic, but it also came with two metal pieces that you can use to attach to a non-ferrous surface so the case will attach and detach from it as needed. I though this was a nice addition, even though it wasn’t advertised as being part of the package when I ordered this. I like that the softness of the silicone case allows it to bend slightly to accommodate uneven surfaces. The process for replacing the battery is also essentially the same as how you’d replace one in an AirTag.When you consider that this is essentially an AirTag with its own specialized case that you don’t have to buy separately, it does seem like an economical choice, especially if the case is something you’d use. Time will tell if it has the same longevity as an AirTag; stay tuned!

It works!
Set up was simple; the directions say to pry the device open & insert the battery. I did but found the battery was already installed, I just needed to pull the little tab. Open your Find My app, pair it, name and pick an icon from the apple Emojis.I attached it via the built-in magnet inside the car and went on an errand. Once I traversed the large parking lot & was well into the big store, an alert popped up on my watch that I’d left the tracker behind & it was now out of range. Don’t know if there’s a way to shorten that range, which would be helpful if the tracker was in your purse, on your kid, etc. I pulled up Find My on my iPhone and it showed me where in the parking lot the tracker was located. Pretty handy if you forget where you parked or one of those ginormous airport parking lots.I received a white tracker and a beige silicone case. Some features shown on the product photos I couldn’t figure out how to do, such as the custom car icon and the map of where the tracker traveled.Overall, a handy device at a competitive price point. Will probably get a few more.
