Great Value – Not plug &play
This is a highly functional, high quality, great value unit that remains available at a discount price because it’s simply a few years old in design and not built for the smart home / phone app market. This is the 2nd one I’ve purchased and would buy again. I bought the 1st one 8 years ago for a different room and it’s never skipped a beat. This was considered a high tech unit until the world shifted to everything working from your smartphone. This is the perfect selection for a fully programmable thermostat for older system installs where there is no common wire or interest in smart home wifi capabilities. But this unit is not the easiest on the market to install or operate if you like to adjust from the schedule frequently and have users who have trouble learning how to use features beyond the on/off button. Lol. It’s not hard, but it can be annoying for those who struggle with technology to learn how to operate Using the menu options to shift back and forth between a programmed schedule and holds on set temperatures that you may want to temporarily set (until next programmed interval) or hold for longer by placing program on hold until “cancelling” back to the schedule. For installation,I’d rate this as moderately difficult. You should be comfortable doing an installation that requires a bit of knowledge and experience with home repairs. Honeywell rates this as requiring professional installation. I wouldn’t go that far but you should be familiar with HVAC common wiring (or comfortable reading and following instructions inclusive of multiple options) and HVAC configuration terms which are selectable through an old school software interface to set up the thermostat to match your heating and cooling system(s). For this 2nd unit I installed, I was setting up to two separate units and wiring for an oil furnace and central AC unit and got a bit confused. But I contacted Honeywell support via chat and they walked through the installation step by step and helped me to identify the one setting I had incorrect. If you are looking for a really simple installation and user interface with big numbers on an easy to use display, skip this one.But if you want a high quality and fully programmable unit that gives you the capability to move back and forth between a programmed schedule providing energy efficiency 7 days a week and temporary adjustments to meet a variety of individuals (or spouses) who frequently fluctuate from hot to cold, buy this one at a bargain price and value.

    nice low set-pont
I’m using this on a garage furnace that hangs from the ceiling and what I like about it is that I can set the “set point” nice and low, I think I’ve had it as low as 45.I wish the back-light were a lot brighter. I have to get out my phone’s flashlight to light up the LCD so I can see when I turn it on, because normally it’s set to “off” and and the “on off” indicator is tiny, and a little difficult for me to see without added brightness. So minus one star for that and it’s not a big deal for my use case. Otherwise it’s great for a garage thermometer.

    Display temp not accurate.
You absolutely need an separate, fast acting thermometer to set up this thermostat. The suggested cycles per hour are only a starting point. My system, older gas forced air, was supposed to be 5 cph. With the thermostat temperature set at 74, the thermostat called for heat at 71, and when the cycle completed the room temperature was 78. A 7 degree difference. The cycle took about 14 minutes but the temperature on the front of the thermostat never changed from 74.When I finished, with the same 74 degree set point, the cph was at 11. The thermostat now calls for heat about 73.5 and the cycle ends at about 76. A 2.5 degree difference. The cycle takes 12 minutes. Very satisfied with the temperature, but the display temperature still only shows 74. It showed 73 a few times. If the display was accurate, I would have given it 5 stars. If I had not experimented, I would have sent it back as defective.

Nicely featured thermostat, but backlighting is very weak
I generally like the features on this thermostat. The ability to configure it for non-programmable, weekday/weekend program, or 7-day program. Also that when operating in programmable mode, the ability to have a temporary temperature hold (until next set point change time occurs) or a permanent hold. I also like that I can use an external 24VAC transformer to power it from the Rc and C terminals, even through I have a heat-only forced hot water furnace system connected just to the R and W terminals. So the batteries only act to maintain the clock if the power goes out. However the backlighting, when powered using battery-only or by the 24VAC Rc-C connection is very weak. A much fainter and bluer light than on other Honeywell thermostats of this same vintage. For example, the Honeywell RTH5160 I also own has a much brighter and whiter backlight. The RTH5160 also has 30% larger temperature numbers. So if you need a non-programmable thermostat with large numbers, and you do not mind changing batteries once in a while, I would recommend instead the RTH5160.

We had a garage heater installed in our new home and the HVAC contractor used a $3.00 thermostat that wouldn’t go any lower than 10°C. With the cost of natural gas these days that’s too warm for our needs and the mechanical thermostat was too imprecise. The pro T4 is perfect for our needs. There is no C wire with our system so the T4 is running on batteries. We have experience with this thermostat at another house we own with a garage heater and the batteries last at least a year. We can set the garage heat as low as 5°C which works well for melting the snow off the car.Note that the T4 pro apparently has a warranty only if it’s installed by a HVAC pro but the warranty is voided if installed by a homeowner. Worth the risk in my view.
