Customers say

Customers find the compost bin produces no odor, looks clean, and is perfect for countertop use. The bin is big enough to hold most kitchen waste, cleans easily, and works well, with one customer noting it polishes up like new after washing. The build quality receives mixed feedback – while some say it’s well-constructed, others report the lid falling apart into two pieces. The lid’s ease of removal is also mixed, with some customers finding it tough to get off.

    Fantastic product
I’ve been using this regularly for over a year now, and I have to say, it’s fantastic. Not sure what product other people got, but mine has no seams at all that would possibly split. I’ve been very happy with it overall.Pros:- Very tight seal (maybe too tight – see Cons)- Filters are easy to change and work very well – no noticeable odor at all until the lid is taken off.- Attractive on the countertop- Very easy to empty and clean- Has held up well for the past year – with regular use / abuseCons:- The lid is very tight – sometimes it’s tough to get the lid off with one hand (if you have broken egg shells in the other hand for instance). Need to use both hands if the container is mostly empty.I can’t really complain – a tight lid is a good thing, so dealing with the one Con is fine with me.

stainless steel compost keeper good size
Upgrading from plastic to stainless steel is a good choice for keeping compost on a kitchen countertop. Very easy to clean, less smells. This pail is slightly larger than most available in this price range which makes it more useful without giving up space. However, we were very disappointed that the lid is too snug to actual use in the closed position for daily inside use. In order not to have to use 2 hands to open it [one pulling up on the lid and one holding the side knob] I have to keep it tilted open [most inside use requires being able to just pull off the top with one hand because the other is full of veggie scraps] – The snug lid is useful for while making the trip to the back yard compost bin when it is completely full.

Perfect counter-top compost keeper, keeps fruit flies away
We LOVE this compost keeper!- This is not for use to compost inside your house. It is merely a container to hold scraps until you’re ready to carry it outside to your compost bin.- Stainless steel exterior and interior is easy to keep clean, durable, and looks sharp on the counter- Handle is a great size- Entire unit is a great size, even for a family who eats a lot of fresh fruits and veggiesWe were previously using a tupperware with a lid half on/off, and subsequently always had fruit flies. We emptied the tupperware about every other day. I suppose we could have emptied it more frequently to help with the fruit flies, but it’s a bit of a trek out to the compost pile, and I guess we were too lazy to do it until the tupperware really filled up.This has solved multiple problems. The biggest one of course, is the elimination of fruit flies. The second one is the ugly mess you used to be able to see on the counter of fruit and veggie remains.I thought the one-gallon size would be too small for us, since we have six people in the house, and eat a lot of fresh items. But it has been perfect. The only thing it is too small for is if you cut up something really large, like a watermelon, or other large melon. Then you end up with tons of rind, and it won’t fit in here. Other than that, it is perfect for our daily use. We couldn’t be happier with it!

    Looks great, but doesn’t perform
I was so excited when I first received this. As others say, it looks fantastic and is large enough to hold a lot of food waste. HOWEVER, after just a few months of use, it smells really bad (even after multiple cleanings and filter changes) AND the metal seal on the top is coming apart. I’ve now taken out the filters altogether and it still looks good, but the top is really hard to get on and off.For this price, I’d expect a higher quality item. Maybe the old tupperware container wasn’t so bad after all??

    Great, No Smell, No Flies
We were using a ceramic (non vented) container, but the inside of the lid was often moldy, and it would stink. It broke and we went to a plastic container, like for flour or sugar. It was UGLY! Flies (little fruit flies) around the kitchen were a problem. We purchased this compost keeper last month and, so far, it’s great. No smell. Very little moisture build up (from very wet fruits like tomatoes, etc) on the inside. NO flies in or around it. And again, NO SMELL. We purchased replacement filters, through Amazon from another seller at the same time.It looks a lot nicer than the plastic. The handle is nice for pulling it away from the counter.Lastly, a word on fruit flies and all the expensive trick traps. If you buy produce, you’ll get flies. If you spend $6 and up on traps, you’ll still have some flies. Make an old time funnel fly trap. Take a few minutes to make a cone out of typing/copy paper (tape it in case you have to change the size). Make it taper from a point to have a mouth of a few inches in diameter. Cut the tip off so the bottom is about 1/4 to 1/2″ in diameter. Put a piece of apple or other produce in the bottom of a jar, like a small mason jar. Put the paper funnel in the jar, ensure the bottom end is an inch or so above the fruit.Viola’! A fly trap. You’ll be surprise at the number of the little buggers you catch. If there are a few you can kill them by squishing them with the paper funnel as they near the top of the jar. If there’re a bunch, I usually go out side and remove the funnel to just get rid of them.

    Norpro’s name should be Norjunk
Basically this is a stainless steel bucket with lid containing a pair of carbon filters on top. As far as “working” elements are concerned, the lid is the thing; you have air flowing through, so the container can “breathe,” but the filters catch any smells. The lid is made in several pieces to hold two filters in two different compartments.A good idea, if done right. Unfortunately, in this case, it is not. After less than a month, my lid simply fell apart into two pieces. There are no welds, no soldered joins, no screws, not even a dimpled edge to hold it together. Now when you lift the lid, half stays in the bucket, with the filter falling out.Nice job, Norpro! Try another brand, this one looks nice in the picture but it’s a fly-by-night junk product.
