Yet another excellent budget lightweight tri-mode gaming mouse from Redragon
I have always been impressed with Redragon mice and the software that comes with them, and they seem to constantly come out with new models. This one is another of their lightweight gaming mice and unless you need really high DPI or a polling rate higher than 1000 Hz, this mouse might be for you.The Redragon M821 comes in their typically large red box with stickers but the high quality braided USB-A to USB-C cable I got used to getting with their gaming mice comes instead with a thinner rubber cable with this mouse. The 8 page user manual all in English is decent sized and easy to read. It’s also much better than the multi language pdf file you can download by scanning the code on the front of the manual. The easiest way to find the driver software is not by searching through all the various Redragon websites, but instead by simply doing a search for “Redragon M821” where you will find the download link for the software near the top of the page you find at the top of your search results. It connects over the 2.4 GHz dongle, wired or over Bluetooth.The Redragon M821 weighs just 53.0g, and the design should be familiar to anyone who has had a lightweight Redragon mouse before, with the DPI button and light on the bottom of the mouse. The logo on top is a very subtle shiny black which does not call attention to itself.Buttons and Ergonomics: The mouse is suited for left or right-handed use only, and is very comfortable to hold. Because it is so light it is effortless to use. The mouse skates on the bottom work well, but you need to remove the thin clear covering that cover the mouse skates on the bottom first. The left and right clicks are not 100% silent, but they are quiet as mouse clicks go. The mouse wheel is one of the very best I have used, and the mouse wheel button does not require very much effort to push. The forward and back buttons are also fairly quiet and work well. The forward button has tiny bumps on it making it easy to tell apart from the back button and I’m very happy Redragon continued with these buttons for the forward and back buttons as they are still my favorites.Battery: 400 mAh which they say is good for up to 70 hours of use in BT mode with a recharge to full time of 2 hours.Driver software: You get up to 3 profiles you can set up. You can have up to 5 DPI levels, with the default being 400-Red / 800-Blue / 1600-Green / 2400-Cyan / 3200-Purple (Up to 12800 in the software) and each DPI level can be changed as you like along with whatever color you prefer for that level. GROK AI calls the S205 sensor in the M821 with its top 12800 DPI “ample for 99% of gamers”. You can also change the report level to 125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz or 1000Hz. Another tab is the Macro tab which I did not try but I assume it works. Unfortunately, there is no battery level indicator in the software which I think is a major omission, although the battery level does display if you use it in Bluetooth mode. The LED light flashes red when the battery is low and needs charging, but you need to turn the mouse over to see it. The DPI returns to the default DPI level light when the battery is full.Sleep mode The default sleep mode is either 2 minutes (manual) or 10 minutes (listing). However, the sleep mode an be set to 3, 5 or 10 minutes or turned off completely in the software. Hell of a budget mouse. Good job red dragon!
I’ve used this for a couple days so far. I gotta say, good job Red Dragon. This is coming from someone who mains a Lamzu Maya X and mainly plays CS2.Size and shape:It’s a near 1:1 of my Lamzu Maya X, to say it’s a slightly bigger Logitech G Pro X Superlight.Weight:Basically dead nuts to what’s advertised (unlike some other brands). 54.5g from my pretty accurate scale. Anything under 60 grams is perfect in my book. I use an Artisan Zero pad and like the sub 60g mice.Features: 1000hz polling is bog standard, and totally fine for nearly everyone. IMO anything over 2Khz polling is just killing your battery for neglegable difference. I’d expect nothing better for $30.What you’re giving up for the price tag:- Coating.The major thing that sets this apart from high end mice is the lack of a coating. It feels to me like an ABS shell with a molded texture, but completely uncoated. Meaning there is no “dry coating” or “rubberized” coating you’d find on major brand competative mice. In the hand it feels fine but definitely doesn’t feel like a $100+ mouse (because it’s 1/3 that cost). But in-game I honestly could care less. If this is all I could afford or wanted to afford it wouldn’t hurt my gameplay at all.- Polling/Sensor.This is using a budget Instant Microelectronics S205 sensor, not even a low end Pixart sensor. Does this matter much in-game? No. Does it help this mouse come in near the cost of a dollar store mouse? Yes. It’s roughly half the cost of a budget Pixart sensor. But it definitely gets the job done, even with lackluster on-paper specs.- The Skates.The skates are probably not PTFE, and if they are, they’re a little rough. Nothing major but they’re not top tier skates. They’re 100% serviceable though. They’re about the same or slightly better than stock g pro x superlight skates to put it in perspective.My conclusion:This mouse is hitting all the check boxes for what I specifically like in a competitive gaming mouse (minus the coating and sensor). It’s a lightweight full size symmetric comp style mouse for 30 bucks with acceptable technical specs.Notes for Red Dragon (if you’re reading this).The only negatives are the dongle being a little difficult to get out of the bottom, and the molded grooves around the palm area. The grooves aren’t necessary and will catch hand gunk over time. ALSO if you could sell this thing with a matte coating (and smooth molded shell) and fit a budget pixart sensor (or something supporting 4Khz polling) in, it’d be top tier for comp gaming on a budget, and sell like hotcakes. The shape is perfect, and that’s one of the most important thing for comp mice, don’t change it!
