Best quality for a low monthly fee
This system was easy to install and provides quality video surveillance of our home. The monthly fee is so affordable and helps our minds at ease. The connectivity is wonderful even with our slow internet we have out in the country.

Very unreliable cameras
The cameras work with certain WiFi routers and access points and not others. After hours of troubleshooting I figured out the cameras do not stay reliably connected to an Ubiquiti AC Pro access point. It does stay connected to a U6 lite or Nana HD from the same company. I tried a TP-Link outdoor access point and an Asus router and it didn’t stay connected. That doesn’t mean it won’t work with other models from those manufacturers. There’s no list available for what will or won’t work, so you’re gambling when you buy one of these. When the cameras work they are pretty decent. When they don’t they’re worthless. If your cameras work for a little then stop working, and your WiFi signal is definitely good enough, you probably have an incompatible router or access point. No amount of swapping cameras or calling support will fix your problem for more than a few hours.Other than the cameras, I’ve had SimpliSafe for a few years and it’s an OK system. They’ve gone through a few companies for their monitoring and service and support has varied from OK to downright horrible. Prices for monitoring have been going up a few times a year recently. They know that once you have a system built up, you’re unlikely to cancel the monitoring if they raise the price.

not for those who don’t want to pay a monthly fee
As for setup, the system is intended to be setup all at once and to have installer start the app side of things before doing the physical installations. Not knowing that, my husband had gotten most of the physcial stuff done before I had the task of handling the techie stuff. The system balked and gave me an error message that just said I needed to contact support. Fortunately, support was helpful but let’s just say the installation wasn’t as smooth or fast as I would’ve liked. Video and sound quality on the recording are excellent. App is more intuitive than most and there are a lot of settings that can be tweaked depending on your needs.For our purposes, I had hoped we’d be able to set this up and not pay a monthly subscription. We’re not really looking for it as a security system but to be aware of wildlife activity in the backyard and on our decks (really, so we can see how the raccoons are getting to our bird feeders on a deck that isn’t reachable by stairs).Turns out, the cameras cannot be used to detect motion and record unless you’re paying for a subscription. Fortunately, while it isn’t mentioned when you first set up the system, there is a self monitoring option that costs less and lets us get the motion detection and recording we want. We have the lowest paid subscription for the moment but I’m not sure we’ll keep it; the unit says it detects motion within 30′ but so far we have known motion within 20′ that it is not detectng.If you are wanting to install your own security system and get one that is modular and can be extended/expanded over time and assuming you’re good with a monthly subscription, this is a good option for you to consider.

Easy to Set Up – Easy to Use
This is not an off-brand security system. Itâs SimpliSafeâa well-known company. My system came with a base station, two outdoor cameras, two door sensors, a key fob, and a keypad. The setup was fairly easy. If you can read instructions, youâll do fine. The free SimpliSafe app is straightforward and simple to use. The system doesnât have a built-in way to record video. If you want to review past footage, youâll need to subscribe to the optional monitoring service at an additional cost. I only set up part of the system because we were about to leave for Mexico for three weeks. I installed the base station and the two cameras. Even though I was thousands of miles away, I could still use the app to see what was happening on my front porch and back deck in real time. Now that weâre back, Iâll add the door sensors. I recently ordered an interior motion sensor to expand the system. I donât like that recording video requires paying for monitoring. I wish we could insert a memory card and record locally. Also, the rechargeable battery in one of the cameras simply wonât hold a charge. During setupâwhich I spread over several days because I was busyâI placed both cameras side by side on the dining room table, pointing in the same direction. One cameraâs battery would lose 2 or 3% each day, while the other would lose about 20%. Iâll see what customer support has to say about this.Pros:- Quality equipment, works well- Easy to set up- Cameras give a great picture- Easily controllable through the appCons:- Canât record your own video- Monitoring seems expensive- Without monitoring, all you get is a loud alarm when a sensor is tripped.This is a worthwhile security system. Its full potential only comes with the extra-cost monitoring.
