Customers say

Customers find the screw starter works well, particularly on flat head slotted screws, and appreciate its quality and usefulness in tight spaces. However, the screw hold feature receives mixed feedback – while some say it holds screws well, others report it won’t hold them at all. Moreover, the tool’s stability and sturdiness are concerns, with several customers reporting it falling apart during use. Additionally, opinions on value are mixed, though many consider it a great value.

    Dropped screw or sane job
This thing is so useful that I recommend for any toolbox. Home or automotive it will keep you sane when you have to “thread” a small screw into a tight space. This particular unit doesn’t appear as well made a the original one I have, but It’s still totally functional. Always remember the last time you had to fumble with a dropped screw, and add this to your stocking stuffer list.

Stanley Proto J9866 Proto Slotted/Phillips Screw Starter
    – While this actually works for ‘most’ of what I wanted to use it for, – It May Not Be What ‘You’ Need.- For ‘Straight or slotted’ screws, It does very well, and holds the screw ‘tightly’ (the screw has to have a square, straight sided slot & not tapered) Think; the screws in electric wall switch plates (maybe even a bit smaller), thru #10 size screws, and some ‘larger’ screws .- As for ‘Phillips’ heads, it works for size #8 (Machine, sheet rock/deck type screws), But I was disappointed that it did not work for most size #6, and not well for larger than #8 size screws (I tried it on various types of screws I had in stock).- I will say, that as far as working the ‘Phillips screws’, – It did work better than the ”Ullman DE-2 Aluminum Double-Ended Screw Starters with Phillips and Slotted… ”, – which I couldn’t get to work even for size #8 screws (tho, it did work ‘almost’ as well on slotted screws), – I plan on returning the “Ullman”.- So, depending on your ‘Intended Use’, It may/may not be of value to you.

    Nice Proto tool
The tool is well made and looks professional. The tool works well on small slotted head screws but will not grab a standard Philips head screw. Not recommended for use on Philips head screws.

    Meh
I had mixed results with it. Worked well sometimes. Unfortunately it occasionally launches your precious tiny screw through the air, and apparently into another dimension as you will never see it again. Not for that bizarre metric oddball screw that you can’t afford to lose. Find another way to start that one.

I don’t know how I lived without this tool!
You need to start a screw back in a deep, dark corner and there is no way your hand is going to fit? It would have taken fifteen tries and 3 barked knuckles, but with this tool its in and ready to be tightened before you even know it. It does work better on flat heads as many have stated, but if you take it easy it will work on Phillips too.

Sometimes these are your best choice
Does phillips and slots screws one from each end. I have used these for decades without any complaints ever. 5 Star Rated it fits in your shirt pocket like a pen with its convenient pen clip. Eliminates all bulk from the user

Not Good for very small Phillips head. Extremely Difficult to Use
I would NOT recommend this product. The springs are extremely difficult to move/turn. This is quite cumbersome and a problem when dealing with extremely small screws, especially with a Phillips head. There are better options out there.

Absolute waste of money unless you have very strong hands and excellent eyesight. Do not buy if you need actual assistance with starting screws. My thumbs are now aching from trying to use it, with zero success. I have put the screws that starting in the old fashioned way with less pain, stress & swearing involved than the time wasted on this tool.

Cheapest double screwstarter i could find. Quick shipping. Use it for my vintage sewing machine collection. Good quality feel, i wish that the slotted screwtip would be thinner, so i could it used for tiny screws. But usefull tool
