The Thule 982XT Bicycle Frame Adapter for strap and hitch carriers is a cross bar adapter for hard to mount bike frames such as women’s bikes, children’s bikes, BMX, full-suspension and non-standard bicycle frames. This bike frame adapter creates a straight tube top so that the bicycle can be carried on a hanging style bike rack. It features a telescoping bar that adjusts to multiple frame sizes and style, and padded collars that attach to your bicycle’s seat post and headset for a secure hold. As an added convenience, the Thule 928XT frame adapter features easy-to-use push buttons that allow for quick mounting. This bike adapter bar is compatible with most strap and hitch mounted bicycle carriers.

Great– MAKE SURE of a couple of things when using.
I have a nice mountain bike but the 29er frame required a frame adapter for our Thule hitch mount bike rack. I was super nervous about relying on the adapter to keep the bike safe– but it is a very well made product, easy to use and worked perfectly.Only items to be aware of (not having to do with the Thule Adapter):1) MAKE SURE that your seat post is very tightly attached to the bike frame. If the seat post slips out during travel in your car, the rear of the bike will fall off the rack.2) If you have a larger bike or larger wheels (29er)– AND you have a lower car (like a minivan)– your bike’s front tire may hang too low to the ground. No problem if you’re planning on driving on perfectly flat roads. But a speed bump, dip entrance in/out of a gas station, etc. could cause your bike to scrape the road. You can solve this by either adding something under the Thule Adapter– or just removing the front tire.

Wish I got this sooner
This thing is a ‘must have’ for anyone with a full suspension bike and a trunk rack. The rear shock on most full suspension bikes causes problems with a trunk mounted rack as you should not rest the rear shock on the rack. I had tried mounting my bike every way I could think of to avoid putting weight on the shock…even hanging it upside down. Well worth the money and solved all my problems. I regret not getting it sooner. The ends that hook around your seat post and headset are made of a hard plastic or rubber that will not scratch your bike. It is easy to put on and take off. It’s adjustable so it should fit any bike. It works fine as is but I’d like for the bar to be a little thicker in diameter so the straps on my bike rack could grab it more.I use this adapter with a Thule 9001XT rack and my 2015 Specalized Stumpjumper Elite

Great quality adapter, but may not fit smaller bikes
My wife has a Schwinn Ranger with a small frame (24″ wheels), and it barely fits between the seat post and handlebars with it collapsed. If I needed it for a smaller bike, like a child’s 20″ BMX style, I don’t think it would fit. Otherwise, it’s great and feels like it is good quality, as I would expect from Thule.

FINALLY
For anyone who has ever struggled and cursed while trying to adapt your bike to your bike carrier, this Frame Adapter is an absolute godsend. Anyone who has ever tried putting a step-through frame (lady’s bike frame) onto their car rack knows exactly what I’m talking about. This adapter is so brilliant in its simplicity. It basically creates a straight line hypotenuse out of your irregularly shaped bike frame, making it perfectly simple to install the bike onto the rack. It’s quite heavy duty and the parts that cradle the bike frame are coated in a very heavy layer of hard rubber so your the frame stays pristine. FINALLY!

Works but not what I expected
I have a Thule bike carrier and love it. Got new step through bike so needed an adapter so the good is this one is very sturdy and the quick release feature is excellent. The not so great is the lack of a firm length adjustment feature. Yes it adjusts but you have to buy additional tie down straps and it will be loose front to back. I was disappointed for the price you pay.

I used this along with a Thule Passage 3 to carry a Full suspension Mountain Bike 1500km through Canada to the Rocky Mountains. The bar worked as advertised to carry the bike, but I personally highly recommend you choose a cradle style bike rack over a frame hanging one. High probability of damaging your frames if carrying more than one bike, and damaging your vehicles finish and paint.
