Better than Phillips
I ordered a set of these wood screws after reading somewhere that a star drive head is far superior to a conventional Phillips (or slotted) had screw. Having far too much experience with rounded-out Phillips-head wood screws, I was eager for something better better – and these Velocity screws certainly are. I would normally drill a pilot hole for a #10 wood screw but I put these to the test without doing that, in a piece of pressure treated lumber. It did take the screw some time to get itself started and it wandered around a bit in the process. I would at least use a center punch if I wanted to locate a hole precisely, but once, started, the screw went in and back out easily with no sign of damage to its head. I’m sold on this design.

Worth their weight in gold!
OMG, these are the best screws for outdoor work! I am always dropping screws (carpal tunnel), and these screws fix that problem! They are easy to use, drive well, and come in a great assortment for outdoor building or repair. I intend on buying boxes of these for larger projects, and to keep my assortment stocked!So glad I found these screws, I thought my days of building things for pleasure were over, they are not, thanks to these screws.I also bought the interior assortment, and I am very pleased with them too!

great, but one huge caveat
I was skeptical, but these screws are unbelievably good. They actually do stick to the bit, even a standard phillips. I’m not sure the advantage of their proprietary dual robertson/phillips bit except to enforce their patent. Even with standard phillips they do seem to have less camout than a standard screw would. Amazing.The finish quality is outstanding. They drive incredibly easy. You don’t even need a pilot hole.!The price premium over ordinary wood screws is minimal, at least at the level of buying 1000 screws.Now the bad stuff, which takes 5 star review down to 3 stars.Head over to the mfr site. Only advantages are talked about. ok fine … but what’s missing? No mention of pullout strength. Given that these drive so easily, 1) they probably have correspondingly less pullout strength than a standard wood screw. 2) They probably backout more easily than a standard wood screw under repeated tension cycles, eg a door hinge opening and closing. The absence of even a hint about these factors on the mfr website is all the proof I need that these screws are deficient in those factors. If I had the choice, I would not allow these to be used for my construction project. The cost savings of the time efficiency will 100% benefit the contractor and not be passed on to you. Whereas you will 100% get the long term downsides of the 2 major negatives I’ve mentioned.A minor negative is that the 8 sizes available in this kit are the only 8 sizes the mfr makes. I wish more sizes were available.For DIY light duty use, I very highly recommend these screws (5 stars). I would and will buy them again. For a contractor that wants to save time and improve quality, I also highly recommend these screws. As a homeowner or other large project client, I would ban use of these screws, even after considering the very large safety factors inherent in screw specifications.Somewhat disappointingly, they are made in China. For the same price, you can buy Spax brand screws, made in USA, which also have a combination square/phillips drive. They won’t have the “stick-tite” drive though, and won’t have the other features these screws have. So if you value that, coming in at the same price is actually a premium since you lose the features.EDIT: added a star in response to velocity’s comment about pull-out strength.

Finally found small diameter screws worth reviewing
Just a homeowner renovating my 30 year old mobile home.I was looking for small diameter square head screws like the ones in my home.Stumbled on these.Hate Philips and slotted screws.So far used to mount blinds and curtain hardware.It does what it says stays on bit no need for magnetic tipped drive.No slippage drives very nicely with my small impact drill.Iâll will use exclusively from now on.Have not tried it with star bit it says will work just donât loose bits came with set.

These things are awesome. I had to fix some old framing and used these to do the job. They went right through the 2×4 with no problem, the belt tight and the counter sink head was excellent. I wish I had found these screws sooner.
