Does the job, makes good coffee
Every morning at work, I made a fresh large pot of coffee in the traditional coffeemaker. When I came back to get a cup ten minutes later, the dudes in my department had taken the entire thing. The WHOLE thing. Every day. So I decided to get something that wouldn’t run out. I usually fill it about half full. Do NOT use any sort of filter! You don’t need it and it will not work at all with a filter. As the directions say, if the coffee seems to sift out of the basket, just wet the basket before adding the ground coffee. One thing I really like about this appliance is that it keeps coffee a bit hotter than glass carafes.

West Bend 33600 100-Cup Commercial Coffee Urn – AND MORE
I bought this coffee urn several weeks ago and have used it every week since…for TEA! I drink a lot of tea, all kinds of tea really, but mostly black, and it has to be FRESH brewed. I used to make tea every 1-2 days using one of those lightweight plastic brewers, which works fine too, it just couldn’t keep up with my demand & I was getting really sick & tired of making it so often. Now I make it just once a week on weekends, 2.5 gallons at a time. I had researched a bunch of different kinds of commercial type tea brewers, but for some reason they seem to run in the $200-600 range. I’ve made a lot of tea in my regular coffee pot too, so I started looking at these large coffee brewers as a possible alternative. I figured for the price, it would be worth a try. So far, I absolutely love this thing! So easy to use, so easy to clean! If tea would stay fresh for 2 weeks at a time, I’d make 5 gallons instead. I bought a 2.5 gallon plastic water jug (rectangle gas can shape) with a spigot from Walmart for a few bucks, fill it up once the fresh brewed tea cools down, and store it in on the top shelf of my fridge. It’s a miracle. So the point of this long review is really to brag about this thing as a cost-effective tea maker, as it’s already proven to be an incredible coffee maker. I’ve also got a half-dozen other uses in mind for it! Zero complaints.SPECIAL NOTE: If you plan on using this machine to make tea (or coffee for that matter), you MUST keep in mind that the “cup” marks on the side of the urn indicate the philosophical international “standard” (it’s complicated) fluid ounces for a cup of coffee (roughly 5.5oz), NOT the U.S. standard of 8 fluid oz. in a cup. So that’s roughly 100 5.5oz cups of coffee. When you brew tea with tea bags, their measurements are 8oz. per cup as a serving. 320oz in 2.5 gallons is 40 servings at 8oz./cup. The family size tea bags I use brew 4 8oz. cups per bag, so I need 10 bags for 320oz. Just saving you the trouble…

Good coffee maker
The make has been used several times for church functions and it works well. It even has a small insert to show how much coffee to add for different numbers of cups. A full pot needed about 35 minutes to complete.

Huge LEAK on first use! Nice coffee STAINS ON CARPET!
We got this for our team event. On its very first use, it started leaking profusely when the coffee was getting hot. It stained the carpet very nicely – not! So if you have light-colored carpet, beware of this West Bend coffee urn. Luckily one of the parents saw the leak and notified us before the whole pot (100 cups) would empty out on the floor.The see-through coffee gauge tube was not properly installed by West Bend and sprung a big leak at the base of the gauge tube – Look at the nice stream of coffee in attached picture. That was BAD DESIGN and BAD QA!We should have believed the reviews going back to 2015 with similar problems. It seems that West Bend hasn’t figured out how to fix the problem or they don’t care enough about the 10% of the reviews being 1-star. So take your chances folks, maybe 1 in 10 customers may get lucky and end up with a $100 carpet stainer or luckier yet get a trip to to the hospital for burns. Gee-whiz!!!Another BAD DESIGN: the spigot is directly above the on/off switches so there’s a chance someone may be burned and get electrical shock trying to turn it off while all that hot liquid spills onto the hand!We were lucky no one was burned or electrocuted!SUMMARY: this urn can stain carpet, burn your hands, may give you an electrical shock, squirt coffee on your nice cloths but it doesn’t make coffee! We will STAY AWAY from this West Bend model. We want enjoy coffee not mopping the floor or staining the carpet!Needless today, we are returning this West Bend carpet stainer!
