All Parents of Young Children Should Read This Book
The authors proclaim that as we continue to get more sedentary as a society, our children may be paying the price for inadequate motor development that affects all areas of their lives. From their 70 years of experience working with children, they explain and provide examples in the book how this is so. This book is brilliantly written and provides so many nuggets and angles about motor development and its impact on a child’s success. Every page is valuable. Never have I seen an author put all the whats, whys and hows together so succinctly for what I think can be very complex subject matter. The included demonstrations of the children’s copying abilities before and after motor therapy by Joye Newman was profound and one of the best takeaways from this book. It makes it clear how movement and other skills correlate. I wish I had this book 4 years ago when my son was misdiagnosed with an ASD at age 4. It’s so clear now that he is not on the spectrum, but he did have motor planning and sensory processing issues which kept him from proper sequential development. This book clarified the specific technical issues that we were experiencing without being overly clinical. Our whole family really enjoys the fun activities which account for about half of the book volume. Both my 4 y.o. and 8 y.o. beg to do them. To them they are like party games, but I can tell their minds and muscles are thinking, processing and acquiring skills. I think this book has broad use. I recommend this book highly to all parents of young children to use as a guide in watching and enhancing their child’s development. Each activity gives a “what to look for” section for each exercise that could help in identifying kids that may need closer examination or outside therapy. I would also recommend it to parents of older children who may have skipped developmental milestones and are now experiencing academic or social problems. I think this book would also be great for occupational or other therapists for kids. It’s a true eye opener. I suspect this book will attain classic parenting-book status in time.

This book is awesome! My 8 yr old boy’s sensory needs have changed drastically in the past yr and I have been trying to find ways to meet his sensory seeking needs. This book contains exercises/activities that can be done at home and with minimal equipment to meet various sensory needs. I like that they break it down into which specific sensory needs each activity addresses and how to adapt and/or add more challenge as the child’s needs/skills change. It also covers a large age-range and beginner-advanced activities. We homeschool and adding selected exercises from this book to our daily routine has made such a difference! I am so grateful to have found a book that not only explained sensory needs but also real, practical activities to meet those needs.

Easy to read with simple, fun activities
This book came quickly and was in new condition as expected. The book is a very easy read, I read it in less than 2 days. It gives just a brief explanation on a few sensory areas (vestibular, motor planning, etc) but fails to include all sensory areas such as auditory, visual, oral motor. It lists many, many sensory activities that you can easily do at home without buying anything special. I work with kids under 3 so there were only a few activities listed for 2-3 year olds. (Most of them I already use in my Occupational Therapy sessions.) This would be good for a new therapist entering the field working with sensory kiddos and I plan to let the families I work with borrow it for a better understanding of the sensory world. It would be a great book for a parent with its friendly terms, easy reading and lots of activities that will grow with the child. All in all, I would more likely recommend the original Out of Sync Child book as it explains more about all sensory areas and still includes enough activities.

Must have for parents dealing with SPD
I bought the book to get some activity ideas for my 5 year old daughter with SPD. Each activity is very clearly explained: what area it works on, what you will need, what to do, ways to make it more challenging (so you are not repeating the same activity over and over again) and what to look for.The activities are FUN and EASY – which makes this mom very happy! Even my 8 year old joins us for the “games” – both kids love it and I know that it will benefit both of them!

    Great reference!
I have an 8 year old autistic son who has sensory integration disorder as well. I am constantly looking for new ways to entertain, engage and help him meet his sensory needs and this book has helped tremendously. It’s an excellent reference. I use it to find new activities to throw into my son’s routine. It’s full of book marks and notes so that I can keep track of what I’ve tried and what’s worked and what hasn’t.

What I like about this book is its straight-forward
What I like about this book is its straight-forward, efficient overview of the bodily characteristics of an in-sync child; then the authors dive right into HOW to develop your in-sync child. The activities are simple and fun. We have seen immediate results for our 8 year old son: he’s happily seeking out team sport activities with his friends where previously he would sit on the side and watch. It has been a very moving experience. Thank you.

As an Occupational Therapist who specializes in Sensory Integration, this is the gold standard. I tell my parents and OT students to buy it, as it will clarify so much of their confusion. It gives great information to realize your child is similar to many others, you are not alone and you can adapt the environment to their sensitivities in order to help them function comfortably.

Very well written and easy to follow
I bought this book to work with my 12-year-old son who has developmental delays in both motor skills and muscle development. The instructions for all the activities are so easy to follow, and he loves doing the activities. Doing the activities in the book allows me to really see on a concrete way what movements he needs a lot of work on and what helps him. I am very happy with this book.
