Sometimes everything sucks. This unique, illustrated guide will help you move past negative thoughts and feelings and discover what truly matters to you.

If you struggle with negative thoughts and emotions, you should know that your pain is real. No one should try to diminish it. Sometimes stuff really does suck and we have to acknowledge it. Worry, sadness, loneliness, anger, and shame are big and important, but they can also get in the way of what really matters. What if, instead of fighting your pain, you realized what really matters to you—and put those things first in life? If you did that, maybe your pain wouldn’t feel so big anymore. Isn’t it worth a try?

Stuff That Sucks offers a compassionate and validating guide to accepting emotions, rather than struggling against them. With this book as your guide, you’ll learn to prioritize your thoughts, feelings, and values. You’ll figure out what you care about the most, and then start caring some more! The skills you’ll learn are based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Yes, there are a few written exercises, but this isn’t a workbook. It’s a journey into the stuff that sucks, what makes that sucky stuff suck even more, and how just a few moments each day with the stuff that matters will ultimately transform the stuff that sucks into stuff that is just stuff. Make sense?

Maybe you want to be more creative? Or maybe you simply want to do better in school or be a better friend? This book will show you how to focus on what you really care about, so that all that other sucky stuff doesn’t seem so, well, sucky anymore.

    Great perspective adjustment
This is a good book for changing your attitude or perspective to help avoid negative thinking. My 13 y.o. Grand daughter liked it and I had my 93 y.o. mother read it too.Our brains need to be told to stop thinking like cavemen!

One of the few books I’ve seen my son reading
I have bought a lot, and I mean a lot, of self-help type books for my 12yr old son over the last year. He has been having a lot of emotional and behavioral problems. I have seen this book laying open in his room for few days now. I’m giving it a four star review because I’m not sure if it is actually helping, but he’s been reading it and he rarely reads any of the books I get from him. The book has caught his interest enough for him to be looking through it and that itself means a ton to me. It’s the little things in life now and the message in the book will be beneficial if he can try to apply it to his life.

A way to help an adolescent put their feelings into words.
Excellent book. As a psychotherapist who works with tweens and teens I recommend this. Adolescents want to be heard, not necessarily ‘treated’ and this book names so much that could be going on inside of someone. It’s not preachy nor does it offer any big fix. It can offer some hope but what I’m really finding is it offers an opportunity for my clients to expand on their emotions…which leads to exploration and some self discovery. If read by child and parent, it could open up a way to learn how your child is feeling and generate some conversations on that topic. If you’re looking for an answer or quick fix this might not meet your needs. It might open up the door for a youth to realize that they’re hurting and would like some professional help.

    Curse words “Suck”
I bought this for a middle school student that has been struggling emotionally in my classroom. It is a self help book definitely geared toward a teen audience, however I think a high school student might scoff at it. Unfortunately it has some curse words in it (d,b,h) and I won’t be able to give it to the student I purchased it for.

    Great book for counseling teens
I am leading a class for teens at a co-op school and many have been having issues dealing with isolating due to Covid 19. They are feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, and alone. I’m using the principals in this book to help them regain control of the parts of their life that they can control and helping them see that some things are out of their control and must be accepted as such. It seems to be working and I’ve recommended the book to them. It doesn’t give quick fixes. It teaches coping mechanisms which is what we all need. If you buy it for your kid, read it first. Then you’ll be able to understand and talk with them when they are ready to talk.

As a student therapist, this was exactly what I was looking for. I’ve recommended this book to many clients including adults. Worth every cent.

Der zentrale Satz in diesem Buch ist dann auch “Finde heraus, was Dir wirklich wichtig ist, und dann kümmere Dich darum”, was im Original viel schöner klingt: “Figure out what you care about… and then care about it.”. Vielen Dank, Ben!
