Neat way to handle kitchen scraps
This nifty little compost bin offers an easy way to deal with kitchen scraps while avoiding bad smells and ants or flies who might be interested. The small size of the bin lets it sit on the kitchen counter unobtrusively while looking cool (Martha Stewart, after all). The small size comes with one disadvantage, however. It doesn’t hold a lot of scraps. Using this bin to actually compost stuff would take it out of service for weeks while the composting process takes place. Unless you generate a very tiny amount of compostable kitchen waste, this bin isn’t going to be terribly useful as a full-on composter. But it works great as a place to keep your scraps until it’s time to dump them outdoors in your regular compost bin. The filter in the lid does a nice job of containing odors, and the lid fits tightly enough to keep ants and fruit flies away. Pretty impressive. We set this bin out in an area that is famous for both flies and ants, but after several weeks of use we haven’t seen any insect activity. We like this bin a lot as a container for scraps. Not as useful for full composting, but still a nice addition to the kitchen.

Martha Stewart branded compost bin is made from a sustainable plant based plastic.
I ordered this Martha Stewart Indoor Compost Bin | Countertop Composting Bucket for Kitchen | .7 Gallon Capacity | Includes Filter | Plant Based Materials | Charcoal compost bin to use in our kitchen; we live in NYC where composting has become the law, and weâre still getting used to it.I wasnât delighted with the plain stainless steel compost bin we have, so I thought Iâd try this Martha Stewart branded one instead. Usually Iâve been fairly pleased with her products; I was curious if the hemp liner would help with the smell from the compost bin. (I have a hyper developed sense of smell; no one else in the family is bothered by the compost bin, but I can sure smell it.)Unfortunately l I didnât see a real difference in the smell, but I like the look of the sleek, charcoal bin. Having a second bin also gives me the chance to wash out one bin and let it dry in the sunshine in our tiny back yard; I can keep one bin going while cleaning the other one. This compost bin is made from Astrik; I didnât know what that was, so I looked it up. Itâs a plant based plastic made from polyactic acids from sugarcane or corn starch thatâs blended with repurposed bamboo fibers. It makes a plastic thatâs dishwasher and microwave safe. It looks and feels just like any other plastic; the bin is lightweight and sturdy.I wish the top fit more tightly; I like the handle for carrying this outside, but I worry that I might spill. We use this with compost bin bags. The lid has a hemp liner; itâs good for two months, then should be replaced.I gave this four stars; there were things I liked a lot, like the charcoal color, and the âtiny garbage canâ design. But there were things I would have changed; I wish the top were tighter or closed more securely, and Iâd like a bit more control over the compost smell. A tighter lid might have helped with the scent, as well.At the current price ($49.99) this seems a bit spendy; I know thereâs a premium on the Martha Stewart name, and usually when I buy her products, I feel like Iâm getting a bit extra; itâs specially designed, or aesthetically pleasing, or thereâs some other added value. Almost $50 for a plastic compost bin seems a bit overpriced to me. I was very pleased to have the chance to review this through the Vine program, but this would be outside my familyâs budget, normally.I like having a second compost bin, I like the tiny little Oscar the Grouch garbage can look of this bin, and I liked learning about what Astrik was. But Iâm afraid this was just a good compost bin, not a great one. It could make a cute ice bucket, tooâbut definitely not after you use it for compost. I like the idea of the small, grey colored Oscar style trash can for an ice bucket, maybe on a NYC balcony (fire escape) with a tiny little bar set up.

Perfect size
I never thought I’d need a kitchen compost bin. I was fine using the plastic bags on the counter and then taking them outside, but I tried this countertop compost bin and now I can’t live without it! It’s the perfect option for storing your organic scraps and waste that can be used in compost piles for use in the garden or orchard. It’s very easy to clean; hand wash with warm soapy water and it comes out very clean. Plus, it won’t rust like other metal bins. It comes with specially designed, replaceable hemp-based filters that fit perfectly into the lid of your compost bin, preventing unpleasant odors from escaping. Each filter lasts two months and is dishwasher safe. I love the wooden handle; it makes it look super cute. It’s the perfect size, making it ideal for placing anywhere in the kitchen. It looks sturdy and durable. I highly recommend it.

Great Looking, Doesn’t Stink
We’ve had a countertop compost bin in the past and my wife hated it. It attracted flies and seems like it was always going too long before being cleaned out. We’re currently only using this when we have guests over, which is often, and kids don’t eat all their food. That way it gets unloaded to the chickens immediately after the meal (usually Sunday lunch) and then cleaned and put away until next time. Cleaning is simple enough by hand, though I do with it was dishwasher safe. It is, really, but the heat isn’t good for the bin and especially not for the handle. But it looks great and serves a valuable purpose…turning scraps into delicious yard eggs.

Unimpressed
This compost bucket is overall disappointing. The first thing I noticed was that itâs very lightweight and the lid isnât snug. A compost bucket with an insecure lid that tips easily, spilling organic mess all over is NOT a good thing. The screws for the handle are exposed inside the bucket where they are going to collect debris and require more than a quick rinse to clean the bucket. Yuck. If thatâs the design they went with, they shouldâve added a removable smooth inner liner. To avoid that, I put a compost bags inside as a liner before adding wet coffee grounds and a couple eggshells. The lid is so light and insecure, that it doesnât even push down a bit of brown paper – it just perches on top. This thing is just SAD. I can probably save it by adding some weights to it and using liners, but I could do similar upgrades on a a sand bucket from the dollar store, highlighting how ridiculously overpriced this is.
