“Fiddler, father, widower, cowboy and lover, Du Pré has the soul of a poet, the eyes of a wise man, and the heart of a comic” (The New York Times Book Review).
Gabriel Du Pré’s precocious granddaughter, Pallas, has returned from her Washington, DC, boarding school, and trouble seems to have come along for the ride. Du Pré’s girlfriend’s son, Chappie, is also back from serving in Iraq, minus one leg and one eye. As the family tries to help him adjust to civilian life, the town is invaded by a fire-and-brimstone fundamentalist sect, whose preacher is hell-bent on imposing his own beliefs on the easygoing people of Toussaint, where even the most pious prefer to keep God to themselves.
Du Pré is content to ignore the evangelists, until a mountain hike turns up the body of a little girl. Although he has no hard evidence, instinct tells him that the fundamentalists may be to blame. Du Pré hunts the countryside for the young girl’s killer, wishing as always that the outside world would leave his beloved Montana alone.
In this “admirable, highly original” series, “Du Pré, a Métis Indian, ignores the speed limit, smokes hand-rolled cigarettes and drinks whisky like it was water. He also plays fiddle like an angel, takes care of his friends and defends the weak with equal passion” (Publishers Weekly).
Nails is the 13th book in The Montana Mysteries Featuring Gabriel Du Pré series, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

These aren’t mysteries as much as they are a lifestyle with a lot going on
I wish that Peter Bowen could have been a more prolific writer, as I love spending time with Gabriel and all the people of Toussaint, Montana. The narrator has improved with time, though he is still not as good as Christopher Lane, who brought true art to his presentations in the early Audible.com releases. He has now learned how to pronounce the names and gained some acquaintance with the cowboy way, at least enough to convey the soul of Booger Tom. Bart takes a back seat in this story for the most part, and Benetsee, the annoying shaman, medicine man, and magician of the land, also spends little time on stage. Gabriel is trying to work out the mystery of a young dead girl with the help of genius Pallas, his granddaughter, newly returned from school back East.If only we could have at least one more Gabriel story, with Pallas at last getting married. She has had her sights set on FBI man Ripper since she was six, and I want to know if he escapes. She is more mature now, ready to take on the vices as well as the responsibilities of becoming an adult, even though she’s still a young teen.Another reviewer felt there were inconsistencies with the children’s names in this book. I have never noted this, and I’ve been reading and re-reading this books for many years. There’s so many of Jacqueline’s children that only a few ever step forward into the story line. These books are a wonderful group, and you need to read or listen to them in order. The drawback is that I, at least, begin thinking in Coyote French. When I see pictures of Red River carts online, I think of the times Gabriel has recalled the story of poor Louis Riyal, of Genevieve, of all the other Metis who asked only to care for their families and dance a little.I wish that I were able to attend one of these dances at Toussaint, with Pere Godin, Bassman, and Du Pre’ playing to a packed house, Madeline passing out platters of prime rib, and I would dance a little.

Good Read
I love this series about a group of individuals who have a very distinct culture. The books are well written, fun and a pretty good mystery, Just like the folks they are written about, I am sure.

Great read
Probably the most original series I’ve enjoyed in a long time. The locations and characters along with the history behind them are fascinating. Often find myself wanting to talk in their dialect.Always anxious for next book in series.

Always a good read…unless!
Unless…how do you feel about God? Were there dinosaurs or is the world only a few years old. This book may not be for everyone, and there are sections that will offend many. Still a good read. Now go write your own review. I have read three of Bowen’s in the last week and my wife wants to know when I will stop buying more and read the fifty or so I haven’t opened yet. There are so many is d me still in hand! So it is time to go to my library and check out two or three (at a time!)

Loving all the books in this series,
The stories and the characters are very well developed. I enjoy the writing style and I really like the main characters who are present in the books in the series that Iâve read so far. The author is knowledgeable on a lot of subjects and/or does his research well. I have learned a lot of interesting things as well.

Nails (Gabriel Du Pre Mystery)
I give Nails four stars even though, of the seven Gabriel Du Pre books I have read, I enjoyed this one the least. This should give you an idea about how much I enjoy this character. Despite the serious theme of these books, Du Pre brings enough humor to them that I am usually smiling throughout. In Nails, I think that Bowen spread the “staring” role among too many other characters and away from the real star, Gabriel Du Pre.

I truly enjoyed Nails. I had to wait for a friend …
I truly enjoyed Nails. I had to wait for a friend while he had took a test to renew his drivers permit. He left his Kindle with me while taking the required road test. I opened the reader and POW! For the first time I read a book by Peter Brown. It’s a great entertaining story. When I returned home I completed Nails on my own Kindle. 5 star book. Since then I read a second, and started a third. Great read. 5 STAR.

Nails is a great story
Peter Bowen writes great stories, his characters are engaging and real, salt of the earth people. The plots are well done, and the books are almost impossible to put down. The stories are spiced with humor and just the right amount of action. I love the characters, plots and locales. This is an author whose books are to be eagerly anticipated.

Peter Bowen is probably in my top 3 authors of all time. The Gabriel du Pre series is told in deceptively simple, stark prose, with oblique conversations full of subtle meaning. His supporting cast of characters – du Pre’s forgiving partner Madelaine, his huge family of wilful children and grandchildren, Bart, the millionaire recovering alcoholic – his love-hate relationships with authority, the FBI, and the irritating, demanding ancient holy man Benetsee – build a tapestry of small town life in Montana and the inexplicable evil that hides in plain sight.Like most of the du Pre books, Nails addresses the conflict between long-term residents of a small community and newcomers who try to impose their own rules and morality. But are the cult-like new arrivals the source of the strange happenings?I can’t recommend this series highly enough – if only there were more of them.

Another excellent addition to this series.
