Sustainable Home

Introduction
We are part of the Earth. Beyond the walls of our physical, man-made homes lies a unique environment perfectly suited for our survival, and ultimately our success. From their beginning, humans have utilized all this environment had to offer in order to thrive – reveling in its plenty, and growing strong on its treasures. As our species evolved, we learned to innovate, all in attempts to improve our quality of life.

Living
When you first enter your home, there’s a high likelihood that you will walk straight into the living area. It’s here that the widest range of activities take place; whether that’s relaxing on the couch as you read a book, catching up on the latest television series, or entertaining visitors. Some of the most memorable occasions I’ve had with family and friends have taken place in our living rooms – it is where we come to gather and socialize.

Kitchen
Feeling that rumble in your tummy? It’s time to head to the kitchen for a bite! Often the place we go to for a quick refuel throughout the day, the kitchen sometimes becomes much more than that: a place to slow down and focus, taking time and care in preparing feasts and nourishment for friends and family. The kitchen not only helps us to recharge, but also to reconnect. I know mine does.
Additional Contents of Sustainable Home

Bedroom
Humans spend roughly one third of their lives asleep; something that, if you’re lucky enough, you will do in your bedroom. But time is also spent here mentally preparing yourself for the day ahead, and generally relaxing. Bedrooms can be a very personal and sacred space, often a sanctuary from the outside world.

Bathroom
Scrub, wash, rinse and repeat. The bathroom gives us a space to cleanse our bodies before the day begins and when it is over. We utilize a plethora of personal care products and plenty of water to take care of ourselves on a routine basis – there’s no denying that the bathroom can be filled with many small rituals to help you feel your best.

Outdoors
As discussed in the introduction to this book, the home is the perfect place to start on your journey to living a more eco lifestyle. We are often very emotionally attached to the personal spaces we cultivate with family and friends, and so it makes sense to start here when caring for the environment.

A good start for building a sustainable home
Sustainable Home by Christine Liu takes every part of the house and recommends, for each and every room, solutions and recipes – not always food-related – aimed at creating a household with a higher awareness for the environment. Such an awareness means many things and the complexity of the book allows choices. Don’t expect to achieve all the processes described overnight, but at least you can start somehow. For instance, by separating the garbage, adding more indoor plants to your home or even creating your own herb garden, repairing and/or repurposing clothes instead of just buying piles of unuseful outfits. The most complicated for me was the part about evaluating and eventually creating your own furniture, but with a bit of patience, this part of the plan can also work smoothly. At a certain extent and provided the limits of decency and moderation are maintained, Sustainable Home ofers tips and simple ideas for a different, less consumerist kind of life. It offers to the reader the option of picking up her or his own choices and adapting to his or her own household needs. I will not end up preparing my own toothpaste – except purely by curiosity for the challenge of doing it – or start creating my own furniture, but would prefer to make more balanced and realistic purchase decisions, based on my needs and not on the latest product trends (except books, obviously).Recommended if you are looking for a New Year’s resolution or if you need more structure and aim in organising your medium or long-term decluttering plans.Disclaimer: Book offered by the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Very basic suggestions for those who don’t know where to start
This book is aimed at people who want to be more environmentally friendly in their behavior but don’t know where to start. It’s basically a collection of suggestions about simple ways to reduce how much waste you produce, minimize what you buy, and support more sustainable practices. The author went through the main rooms in a house plus briefly discussed work and eating out. She talked about things like buying food at a farmer’s market, using natural light when you can, unplugging electronics when you aren’t using them, growing house plants or a garden, recycling, buying used, and composting. I had expected more DIY projects from the book description, but there were only a few recipes and DIY instructions. While a decent book if you’re new to this and don’t want to be overwhelmed, it was much too basic for me. I’ve been doing most of her suggestions for years.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.
